This artwork depicts what Neptune's moon Triton might have looked like when it was younger. Triton is generally believed to originate as a dwarf planet like Pluto, before being captured by Neptune. The capture would likely have placed Triton in a highly eccentric orbit. Intense heating ensued as Neptune pulls and stretches the moon's materials; this tidal heating may be enough to melt the moon's interior and triggering a full differentiation separating iron from silicate, maintain subsurface ocean under a thin ice crust, and cause volatile substances like nitrogen or methane to sublimate, forming an atmosphere. This atmosphere would be quite strange; as heat emanates from the interior, the upper atmosphere remains cold enough that methane and eventually nitrogen would condense, producing high altitude clouds across the entire planet. Over time, this atmosphere would be lost, leaving behind a thin atmosphere as seen on Triton today. During this time, formation heat probably caused Neptune to be much warmer than it is today. This would have caused it to look somewhat similar to Saturn, with yellowish haze over white clouds producing a pale yellow planet, except in certain regions where the absence of haze produces blueish tint. It may also have had dense rings, which I cannot be bothered to draw. The inner moon Proteus is visible to the bottom right of the image as a point source.

hey sorry ive been dead but ive been reading "neptune and triton", more specifically þe paper (chapter?) abt triton's capture and evolution. it mentions þe possibility of what is effectively a supercritical atmosphere of >100 bars of CH4/CO/N2 atop a hot sea of NH3/H2O. what þe fuck.????????????????

Alteration of the official New Horizons "extended color" release in order to approximate true color. This works on the assumption that the green and blue channels in the official MVIC release represent essentially raw MVIC red and blue filters. The green and blue channels were blended (55% red, 45% blue; determined by comparing to older true color image releases). The green channel in the official image release became red, and the synthetic green channel was inserted in its place.

A study on drawing a hot Jupiter's nightside.

The dayside is overexposed. The nightside is pinkish from the combination of blackbody radiation and absorption from Na/K/H2O, similar to brown dwarfs.

Whoa, the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS clearly has a tail now! A raw image taken minutes ago with the GMOS instrument on Gemini South and shared live during the Shadow the Scientists event - I raised the contrast slightly.

Giant planets orbiting red dwarfs are uncommon, as are hot Neptunes ("Neptunian desert"), as are exoplanets in polar orbits. On this painting, the host star "observes" its strange planet through a massive polar dark spot.

TOI-3884 b is a planet around an M dwarf whose transits show persistent spot crossings. We show that the star's rotational and spot-crossing variations can be modeled with a misaligned planet transiting a large polar spot (confirming last week's results from Mori et al.)

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has observed Jupiter’s aurora.

The observations help astronomers better understand how Jupiter’s upper atmosphere is heated & cooled, and may prove useful to our #ESAJuice mission, en route to the gas giant.

The cantaloupe terrain of Triton, moon of Neptune, seen from Voyager 2 at about 360 meters/pixel in 1989. These two frames constitute humanity's highest resolution views of Triton, although the lower frame is somewhat smeared (I have corrected this as much as possible).
