My main question here was: Did anybody actually make mix tapes for high school crushes or anybody else as early as 1977?? Like, even by taping songs off the radio through the actual air? I seriously doubted they did, but welcomed evidence to the contrary. And I got a whole bunch.
How Old Are Mix Tapes?
In a 2022 episode of Mrs America (spoiler alert), the Phyllis Schlafly character opens her adolescent daughter’s mail and finds a mix cassette from a boy, which when Schlafly slides it into the tape r...

Liquid IV used Phil Collins’ great “Against All Odds” ad the soundtrack for singing toilets. People are.. unimpressed. But Genesis, Collins et al sold a massive chunk of their catalog to Concord in 2002, including master and publishing rights for the song. concord.com/news/concord...

My wife and I celebrate Super Bowl Sunday as a junk food holiday. First course: donuts I picked up from Sprinkles and a pot of coffee. Second course: Veuve du Vernay mimosas with Trader Joe’s grapefruit juice while we watch the Olympics in bed. Third course: Red Baron french bread pizzas.

If you’re having daughter and you have dreams of her becoming a competitive skier, consider giving her a whimsical name like Peekaboo or Breezy.

I should point out that Pennie Smith gave us permission to use her Paul Simonon photo as long as we didn’t sell anything with it on it.

My favorite thing about the Winter Olympics is how the snowboarders and slopestyle skiers are all beautiful young people who look like highons who don’t give a fuck but then they do these insane tricks that have obviously taken years of hard work and dedication to master. Just the coolest.

My interpretation of why this works is that Taylor Swift's music has always been a combination of pop-punk/emo and rap, masquerading as things that are...not that.
Today I found out about the existence of Taylor More Swiftly, a ska punk supergroup that only covers Taylor Swift songs. "The new Oizone" some people (me) are saying.

In case you missed it, my dopey website turned twenty-fucking-five years old today. How about that?

Grateful to see it all, finally, laid out. Makes me feel less crazy. But I’m so, so furious for all those who’ve been steamrolled and bulldozed by these monsters all along. So many who’ve suffered, friends I’ve lost, whose lives have been ruined, everyone gaslit, all in service of these predators.

Hot take: The album version of “Reel Around the Fountain” is better than the Peel session version on Hatful of Hollow. The lovely piano more than makes up for the terrible drum tone (not your fault, Mike Joyce).

The new Ratboys joint is easily my favorite album of the year thus far, and I had a great time talking to Julia Steiner about every song on the record.
Ratboys' 'Singin' To An Empty Chair': The Story Behind Every Song
