One thing I remember from the early 80s was the generic foods aisle. (Where I shopped.) White boxes marked "macaroni and cheese" and cans marked "chili" and "beer." (Mac and cheese? 25 cents, or about 80 cents today.)
That recession, and the unemployment it brought, was brutal.

Wasn't there a point in the early 80's where unemployment in the US approached 10%? Some of my friends from that time have fond memories of unemployment checks, food stamps, and other not so fun things

24 years ago, I was on the first research cruise to the newly established Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron to map all of the shipwrecks in the area.
We had a huge binder of research on all the suspected wrecks. Most of them sank in a "collision in the fog."

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.
Why?
It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

Japan's rice prices on rise again in test for new prime minister
At a farmer's market not far from Tokyo, more than 100 shoppers queued for a chance to get a kilo or so of Japanese rice for 500 yen ($3.32) by carefully heaping as much of the grain into a small wooden box as possible.

It would be nice to see a bit more incredulity about AI generally.
Scientists just called out Ursula von der Leyen for claiming that AI will match human reasoning by 2026. Her "evidence" consisted, it turns out, of CEO statements from OpenAI, Anthropic and Nvidia. Not research. Marketing materials. 🧵
