And here's my top 4 LEAST favorite games of 2025.

When I say that The Witness insists upon itself, I mean it. It feels very full of itself, not wanting the player to know how to solve its puzzles and making them wander aimlessly until they may or may not stumble upon the solution, no, sorry, the INSTRUCTIONS. The entire game is a massive waste of time. The sad part is that there are seeds in this game that could have grown into something more, like the environmental puzzles. If they had trimmed the fat and only included those, The Witness could have been among the greats. Right now, you're probably better off playing The Looker. I bought this one mainly because of the connection to the Secret Level episode and the Pac-Man levels. At first, it was a neat Metroidvania, if not a bit barren at times. But as the game went on, the issues started to show. Large difficulty spikes, tedious treks through the same locations, and upgrades that take their sweet time actually showing up. The worst part? It has barely anything to do with the Secret Level episode, and the Pac-Man levels are laughably bad. Once I learned this, I realized there was no reason for me to keep playing. Judging by some of the reviews, I'm glad I did, as the final boss is apparently a needlessly frustrating gauntlet. The controls. Good god, the controls. I've tried all kinds of control options, from Wiimote and nunchuck to just the Wiimote and finally the Gamecube controller. All of them bad. Some worse than others. At best, the game controls finicky, at worst, it's unplayable. Even ignoring those issues, there's not much to this game. The Nights-stages are the most fun, but they're too short and sandwiched in-between lengthy cutscenes and boring platforming sections. This could have been a worthy sequel, but they fumbled the landing. The OG is so much better. This one is really only here because I needed 4 examples. But even still, Half-Life 2 hasn't aged that well. At the top of your head, which parts do you remember most fondly? The beginning? Ravenholm? The coast levels? That's all the ones I can think of. Every time any of the other chapters came up, I groaned internally. I completely forgot just how repetitive this game becomes halfway through, recycling the same battles against gunships, Striders and Antlion guards over and over. By the time I came back to city 17, I was just fed up with all of it, and yet it kept going. You can really feel the troubled development and how much of the original concept they cut. It was for the better, because I doubt the beta would have been much better. Either way, Half-Life 1 and the episodes trump this one tenfold.

As this year comes to a close, I wanted to show off my TOP 4 FAVORITE games I played in 2025 (because BlueSky only allows 4 images max).

Ico was a life-changing experience for me. From the incredible visuals and world design to the genuine bond between Ico and Yorda, it made me feel something few other games have. Even if you're all alone in a gigantic world that seems to crush you without even caring about it, as long as we have each other. we'll make it through just fine. I'd adore a remaster, but honestly, I think the PS2 version is perfect the way it is. No sequel necessary either, we got that via Shadow of the Colossus anyway (which gets an honorable mention here, as it would have been #5). The last time I felt this empty during a game was when I first played "What Remains of Edith Finch", and that should tell you exactly the tone this one is going for if you haven't played it. The gameplay is serviceable, sometimes pretty good, but what we're all really here for is the story and the characters. I still think about 2B and 9S now and then, and they're definitely among my favorite video game characters of all time. Another life-changing experience and overall just solid story. It did everything it sought out to do near perfectly, and if I could experience it all over again for the first time, I would. Special thanks to Wizzy, for being the sole reason I actually gave it another shot after my save file got corrupted. Jeff. 'Nuff said. Jokes aside, this game is legitimately fun. It's not as polished as Overwatch, nor as nostalgic as Team Fortress 2, but there's a reason I play this one daily. That reason is Jeff. I'm not even kidding, that little land shark has single-handedly brought me so much joy, it's unbelievable. I've played this game for almost 300 hours, and around 90% of that is on Jeff. While he's not a perfect healer, it still feels like he was made for me, and I absolutely vibe with his playstyle. What also helps is his adorable design and ability to immediately befriend enemy players with it. The rest of the game is perfectly fine, but if I'm going to be honest - if it didn't have Jeff, I wouldn't have played it for more than a single day. After Symphony of the Night, I was hesitant to give Castlevania another try. Its inverted castle sucked almost all my enjoyment away instantly due to the inverted difficulty balance, and I was afraid I was going to be able to enjoy ANY Metroidvania afterwards. That is, until I tried Order of Ecclesia, and I instantly fell in love. From the gorgeous graphics to the genuine bangers in the OST, this one's just a joy to experience. It did get hard here and there, but after realizing that all bosses are just Zelda bosses (i.e. cycling between the same few attacks over and over), it became a breeze. I was forced to grind now and then, but thanks to the more linear levels, there were many spots where it was very easy to do. SotN had far more character, but Ecclesia is just a far more solid game all around. Even has some heartfelt moments here and there, which cemented Shanoa as yet another favorite video game character of mine. I'm very excited to give the other Castlevania games a try now, though I doubt they'll be able to live up to this one.

TLOZ: A Link to the Past (SNES, 1991):
Despite having been surpassed by every Zelda since, it has some undeniable charm. I love how half the items are optional. However, it gets too cryptic and hard near the end, and the Dark World isn't utilized well.
Still, worth playing to see where it all began.

original Doom game from early mid '90s. I replaced the skybox with the quoted picture from twin peaks which shows big pine trees and a hill in the distance. that's Rocky on a foggy day, which itself resembles the original skybox from this game. the scene is in the first level standing outside in a hidden bonus area. the players holding a shotgun and there are dead zombies on the ground ahead.

In hindsight, I feel I was too harsh on this one. The difficulty spike was bad, but I should have experimented more with different weapons and playstyles. I barely even used magic weapons or combos.
I still wouldn't call it perfect, and Ecclesia was better, but it's still a fantastic game overall.

Symphony of the Night (PS1/ PSP, 1997):
Ohh boy, this one. I was on board from the start. Exploring was fun, and combat was not too hard. The first Metroidvania I liked!
But halfway through came a GIANT difficulty spike that simply soured my experience, sadly turning it into a flawed masterpiece.

Order of Ecclesia (DS/Switch, 2008):
"The hardest Castlevania". More like the BEST one! Is it tough? Sure. But WAY more fair than the others. Graphics are gorgeous, especially the animation for absorbing glyphs. Even gave me Castlevania 2 vibes, which it has now surpassed as my favorite. Solid 9/10.
