Hi all! I am a geology professor in Central California, a birder, and nature blogger at geotripper.blogspot.com. Supporter of human rights, friend of LBGTQ, kindness, and equal justice. I travel all I can throughout the American West, and yes, I'll talk about rocks and faults and birds all day.

Talked to a Somali man today who said his mosque last night was surrounded by neighbors ready to protect them against ICE if needed. Made me feel proud to live in this city.

No. We don’t need to “modify ICE training.” We need to close DHS. Dismantle it. It’s an outdated expensive bureaucracy that’s been usurped by violent white supremacists. Shut it down.

Our favorite sighting of the day on a foggy afternoon at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge. We were on the Waterfowl route and came across the first Short-eared Owl we've ever seen in CA #birdwatching

I tend to really hate the Tule Fogs in our Central Valley, but sometimes walking along the Tuolumne River trail there's a certain moody ambiance.

Community members in Minneapolis surround ICE agents as they conduct a "citizenship test" on a brown-skinned man pumping gas at a gas station, ultimately forcing the agents back into their cars.

The message from the White House this morning is that, once again, it falls on ordinary American citizens to remain calm and professional when dealing with the heavily armed agents of the government because they are very emotional and might fly off into a murderous rage at the slightest insult.

Are Americans really going to except a federal police state where masked men kill people in broad daylight with impunity? Really? The answer must be no.

This is an image of a federal agent shooting chemical munitions at a crowd at point blank range in Minneapolis on the day Renee Good was executed

Whatever your feelings on law enforcement, understand they don't apply here whatsoever because ICE categorically *has nothing to do with law enforcement*

My favorite shot from a day at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge. It's a Vermilion Flycatcher, very rare in these parts, but this one has returned to the same set of trees for three or four years now. #birdwatching

I need people to wrap their minds around the fact that here in Minneapolis, ICE broke the window of a vehicle yesterday, pepper sprayed the occupants, and arrested them, and shot another observer in the face today, and OBSERVERS ARE STILL GOING OUT TO PROTECT THEIR NEIGHBORS AT MASSIVE PERSONAL RISK
I’m eating lunch, I’m having a panic attack, I’m charging my phone, and then I’m going back out to try and keep my neighborhood safe.

Stephen Colbert on the ICE murder of Renee Nicole Good: “The message from this administration is clear. Only they determine the truth. And when their forces come to your city: obey or die. And if you die, you clearly didn’t obey. This should be an alarm bell for the entire country.”

Storm aftermath. Rainbow and flooding Dry Creek. It drains a few 100 sq miles in the Sierra foothills and is undammed. It was at 5,000 cubic feet per second, about 20 times that of the nearby Tuolumne right now (which is controlled by Don Pedro Dam). Normal is a few tens of cfs.

This was an extraordinary sight today. At Dyersville Bar the main fork and South fork of the Eel River converge. After the storms this week, something close to 150,000 cubic feet per second was flowing by. In the summer the river may have only a few hundred CFS. #floods

www.modbee.com/news/local/a... I'm quoted in there somewhere. This dam is not a good idea.
Stanislaus dam controversy has it all: seismic concern, condors, unusual rocks
In a new wrinkle, some dam opponents have noted that legally protected California condors have been flying not far from the reservoir site.
