I’m working on a side project and as a developer my first instinct is to open up my IDE. Instead I’m forcing myself for the next couple weeks to start with a brand new tool: pen and paper.

So I just got around to writing up my 2026 website redesign. I talk about why I did it, how I was inspired, and the approach I took. Hope you enjoy!

I’m not a designer, but when I do work on design I feel validated with my choice of software: html and css!
Scott Riley tested free and open source design tools out when researching his course, Mindful Design. They actually worked out better than Figma ever could, as he explains in this article with loads of options for you.

There's an analogy I like to use where I compare it to CGI's uncanny valley. Right now we are in the Beowulf/Polar Express stages and less is more. Practical effects are better with only light touches of CGI at the edges where they can go unnoticed. I honestly think that's the same of Ai too.

This _isn't_ an anti-AI argument. (There are plenty of those to go around.) It's an argument against closed, centralized AI, and in favour of open models you can run on your own hardware. It's critically important that we not mess this up.

Every once in a while I’m reminded I don’t hate country music, just most of the popular stuff that dominates the radio.

This thought today is brought to you by Act I by Kashus Culpepper which I’ve been rocking out to.

Let’s say I wanted to build an app that had a small social aspect to it and I wanted to tie that to @atproto.com… what are some of the best resources to get started? Any guidelines and/or best practices to consider? And any gotchas I need to be made aware of?

Whatever you’re approach to doing it is, I highly recommend building twice. You learn so much the first time and almost always end up building something better the next time.
one approach i'm trying now is to build everything twice

first build is maximalist. let the llm make more technical decisions, expand scope to try different things, get a feel for what works or doesn't

second build is minimalist. keep solid parts, everything else from scratch. review every line

I gave my website a fresh coat of paint and am pretty excited about it! Wanted something playful, colorful, and fun. The bento tiles and their colors are meant to mimic dodgeballs from gym class to emphasize that too.

I really like the approach I took as it's something I can extend and iterate on!

Still have some automation and image generation to do, but I think I nailed my OG image! Again, all html and css because that's the best I can do when it comes to images.

I'm way too tired. OG images, clean-up, minor bug fixes, some perf updates, and more will have to wait for the weekend.

But I have more than enough done to deploy. So consider this a sneak peek while I get some more of those final touches in place and do a write-up!

I just created a favicon image. I have no image/photoshop/design skills. But I realized what I can do is write some html and css, take a screenshot, and then resize the image. So that's exactly what I did. Not perfect, but definitely gets the job done and is in theme with the rest of the site.

Sick kids and restless nights pushed this to the absolute deadline, but I should be able to get initial release out tonight and write up sometime next week!
My paternity leave ends on Friday (it went by way too fast), but I am hoping to get an initial version released before my return to work. Currently have one more page to style and then getting RSS and OG images in place!
Shit... I have an idea on how to redesign my site and I can’t get it out of my head.

We’re still figuring out how to incorporate AI into our day-to-day. The risk with “AI-ifying everything” is that we strip away the parts of work people actually enjoy. The good news: this is solvable.

Here’s my take on where we are in the AI adoption journey:

What happens when AI replaces the parts of work people love?
We’re using AI to move faster. I’m not yet convinced we’re using it to work better.
