If someone asks me if I have any professional advice about becoming a writer, I say no.

But if someone asks me for some unprofessional advice, I've got loads.
Great to head out to celebrate the launch of @mackeza.bsky.social’s Super Nintendo over @loading.bar tonight

So much discourse about online safety, so little chat about the massive PC game store with social network that casually allows the injection of hate speech, propaganda, and disinformation into the digital bloodstream 👍

"you look like someone who has been kicked in the head a lot, how does the idea of hurling down a hill on a tea tray sound"
really enjoy that the bloke who won two golds on the luge is someone who was a national level taekwondo fighter until he got injured and then a government figure stepped out the shadows and said "let me tell you about project going down a hill really fast"

If I have a family friendly video game with a character creator, I always spend at least an hour or two creating a cast of history's greatest villains to populate the game world.

Watching Tony Blair and Idi Amin line up in Wii Sports remains a defining video game experience.
i have made my wife in every game with a character creator from oblivion to baldur's gate and beyond. fighting, rpg, adventure, trombone champ, you name it. the best was battletech where every time she died it made a clone and i ended up with a memorial wall featuring 29 dead wife clones
When ur game has an amazing character creator I'm 70% more likely to try it out

I’ve picked up on an interesting vibe lately that pro-OSA and child safety groups are sussing that spending five years trying to rewrite the global internet (≠ platforms), whilst labelling anyone who criticised them pro-child abuse shills for Big Tech, achieved nothing.

Mobile Legends is one of the big games featured in the Esports World Cup.

It also happens to be one of the favourite games of the Saudi prince, who I interviewed for Power Play.

Do with these facts what you will.
TikTok owner ByteDance is allegedly in "advanced talks" to sell Mobile Legends developer Moonton Technology to Savvy Games Group for between $6 billion and $7 billion

This month's Playing Politics newsletter (paywalled) explores three stories:

- Roblox's rumble down under
- Discord's age verification roll-out
- The Epstein files and their overlap with the video game world.

IMPORTANT

The court has not yet formally ordered the quashing of the provision, and so it still remains in force pending an Order - see highlighted text.

So provision remains in force.

Suspect government may seek urgent appeal before Order made.

Significant that the High Court ruling is still, in places, quite damning of Palestine Action. It emphatically rejects that the group is engaged in "civil disobediance", for example.

It just finds (compellingly) that proscription was still wrong, despite that.

This week's @vgim.bsky.social, sponsored by k-ID, was a simple one.

I interviewed @mackeza.bsky.social to discuss Super Nintendo, her outstanding book about the Big N. And it was, unsurprisingly, a great chat.

Ironic, as this was the magazine that referred to Pokémon as a "pestilential Ponzi scheme" in 1999, characterising its creator Satoshi Tajiri as a literal monster "His eyes are bloodshot; dark circles ripple beneath them... His monsters are a child's predelictions." He never gave another interview.

Absolutely adored @alansiegella.bsky.social’s Stupid TV, Be More Funny.

A forensically funny account of how The Simpsons transformed television, which successfully puts the people who made it right at the heart of the story.

I’m visiting the Wes Anderson exhibition at London’s Design Museum and reflecting on the obsessiveness of the design of his ephemera.

It’s meticulous work that stands in absolute contrast to the idea that generative AI should be used to make background items. Totally the wrong approach!
