Hey. The fragmentation of the social media landscape has been hard on indie #scicomm 🧪 projects

So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.bsky.social?

And if you think your followers might like to, could you give this a repost?

Please boost! #linguistics student here at Swarthmore is running a survey for English speakers (who don't know Mandarin / any other tone languages) about how we learn tones. Take a few minutes to help out with this student research!

New paper in Isogloss! We look at the role of ambient exposure to code-switching in the processing of contextually unattested, but syntactically licit, switches in L2 learners of Spanish. Implications for experience-based processing are discussed.

I’m teaching research methods in psycho/neuroling today in my Language and Brain seminar, complete with an RStudio tutorial and an Instructional Pilot that my students are going to help me design, and this feels very relatable. I’m so excited.
Teaching graduate statistics is such a wonderful experience - I love being in the position where I can say here are all these cool resources, here's what you can do, here's how to do good science #academicsky #R

Had a great time presenting some exploratory analyses from my dissertation tonight in a poster session at #SNL2025, and looking forward to sharing another poster tomorrow night in poster session D!

You’d think that after having walked to campus during tornado watches and having experienced multiple severe thunderstorm warnings, tornado warnings, and hurricanes, I’d no longer be phased by severe weather, but alas.

The jump scare that was my AC kicking on in the middle of a tornado warning.

I will say that a tornado warning was not on my “moving from Florida to the Northeast” bingo card, but here we are.

First photo: my first day on UF’s campus, November 1, 2020.

Second photo: my last day on UF’s campus, July 24, 2025. Oh, how the time flies.

(And as you can see from the first photo, it did take me four attempts to find parking and to successfully navigate to/around UF back in 2020.)

After five years here, I’ve made it to my last week in Gainesville. This week I’m moving to NY to start my new chapter as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology at Bard College.

How do you fit a goodbye into 200-something characters? Bittersweet, to say the least. I’ll sure miss Gville.

I'm looking to recruit participants aged 18+ who are based in the United States and speak English at home. You'll need headphones for this study (it's listening to audio clips), it will last ~30 minutes, and you can receive $5 for participating!

Last year after I taught SLA, I decided to start up a science communication IG to talk about bilingualism/L2 stuff to non-expert audiences. I shut down my IG in Jan, but have since moved to Substack! Share widely with friends/fam who might be interested in bilingual stuff 🙂
How do you define bilingualism — or can we define it? After struggling a bit to figure out how I want my SciComm endeavors to take shape after IG, I’ve taken to Substack. Check out my two most recent posts and share widely to non-linguists!

Defining bilingualism (?)
One summer when I taught a Second Language Acquisition class, I asked my students if they considered themselves to be bilingual.

Yesterday I successfully defended my dissertation.

When I was 17, I learned Danish and from that point I wanted nothing more than to understand how the brain processes our second language.

What started as just one question became something so much larger. Ten years later, Dr. Grace deMeurisse!
