A student confessed that they produced an essay draft with AI, but that they had intended to revise it later so that it would "sound like" them, and therefore they intended to do right. I feel as though I have failed this person so so utterly. What a work "sounds like" has no bearing on its value.
The greatest blind spot in liberalism is its refusal to recognize black history as American history. Ezra Klein’s history of polarization, for example, applies only to white people, even though that whole history is fundamentally about white racial attitudes.
Authoritarian governments are not new to this country. If you want to know what comes next should resistance fail, look to the history of Black resistance in the South.

He truly represents the working man.
John Fetterman chronicles his stroke, unlikely election victory and battle with depression in his new memoir. "The voice in this book is brooding but not particularly thoughtful," Jennifer Szalai writes in a review. "Fetterman offers generalized contempt instead of pointed arguments."

A market, you say? For insurance, you say? A subsidy, you say?
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

We complain that "the media" doesn't do enough. But in truth, we no longer have a media in the old way. In the 20th Century, 200M+ people watched three networks, and had little else to do. The media had power by virtue of monopoly. Today, people only consume news as a kind of hobby.

No one has read a book until they’ve taught it to undergraduates for at least five years. By that count I’ve read, like, six books total. And I stand by it. Your literacy standards are too low.
Dave, you can’t count a book as read if it was an audio book. You didn’t read it you listened to it. Two fundamentally different ways to ingest media. We as a country, need to stop people from saying they “read” 50 books this year when they actually listened to them. Absolute fraudulent behavior.

I'll highlight the "So, let's get this straight???" framing. This is the introductory line of millions of tendentious Facebook posts for the last decade or more. Please reflect on how plastic you are, and the degree to which what you read and what you write changes you. You're not a perfect island.

Every new report on the consequences of Trump’s dismantling of USAID is more horrifying than the last. One model estimates it's caused 600K deaths — two-thirds of them children.

We can’t give Trump a blank check to keep destroying life-saving programs.

People who pay attention always know things before people who don’t. That’s why democrats won on Tuesday but have been losing for the last 9ish years. It takes a while for regular people to “know” what has been obvious to attentive people: Trump is a crook and he’s bad for America.

Grade inflation is a consequence of commodifying education. The scramble for maintaining a class position in a society with widening inequality means fewer spots for children in the class they were born to. Those children can’t complain to the billionaires who make it so. Instead they whine at me.
