A student confessed that they produced an essay draft with AI, but that they had intended to revise it later so that it would "sound like" them, and therefore they intended to do right. I feel as though I have failed this person so so utterly. What a work "sounds like" has no bearing on its value.

DR OZ: I don't believe so. Secretary Kennedy has been advocating for measles vaccines

BASH: Oh, come on

Billionaire power trying to wear democratic institutions like a dead skin. Eventually the Washington Post was just too uncomfortable for Bezos.

I think a lot about Radiator Springs. When RT66 was cut by the interstate, the town died. Like how the Indus Valley Civ collapsed when the course of the river changed. The internet killed the ad system that supported journalism, replacing human editors with the algo. We live in Radiator Springs.

The Epstein Files are a symptom of how weak the old elites have become. We’re drifting into an anarchic global moment, when the powerful can’t even collude to protect themselves. It’s a short term positive for the victims, but it bodes ill for the world. Because it means chaos is coming.

I've written about the overarching post story, causes, underlying pattern. But the failure of Lewis or Bezos to even show up, literally or figuratively, on a day of devastating cuts epitomizes the profound lack of character and accountability that is so common place today within the American elite.

David Foster Wallace studied tax accounting at a business college as he prepared his final novel, THE PALE KING. I became an accomplished letterpress printer while researching… oh yeah, that book is still unfinished.
For my nautical fantasy I learned to scuba dive, to sail, consulted a navy captain about swordfighting, studied iguana biology, swam in lochs and rivers and seas, mucked about endlessly with archery and axes and knives

I mean I did all that before I decided to write it, but it still counts

In my family we play multi-person Solitaire. It’s the same as regular, but you can play on each others’ aces. In true solitaire you play conservatively, avoiding a deadlock. But in multi you play fast. Only one can win. We’ve shifted the country into a manic race.
on the balance i think partisan gerrymandering is bad but the only way it ends is if democrats weaponize it against republicans everywhere they can. wiping out republican lawmakers in blue states might bring the GOP to the table to end the practice.

If AI works perfectly, it kills the need for human labor. Management says they will share the money produced and support everyone with UBI. But don’t you think it’s more likely they will realize their standard of living can be sustained with 1% of the population? If we die, they have Automated Eden.

Gold Snake, 2028!!!!
Reporter: Do any of you have a favorite animal?

Child: My favorite one is a gold snake that can move. It has gold eyes, and it has a super-duper tail…

Reporter: Mr. Mamdani, the second question for you.

Mamdani: Yes. It’s also the golden snake.

Neil Gaiman has announced all of his sleazy extramarital stuff was “consensual”, despite the testimony of the women involved. And maybe someone should speak up and say that’s still not ok. Infidelity is still something a lot of people reasonably disapprove of. I do. He was a hero of mine. He sucks.

We need to calculate the possibility that just because we have a handful of men who have made historically huge fortunes, it doesn’t mean any of them are actually good at business. First movers in a nascent industry that turned into free money glitches feels more and more like cruel luck.

MAGA wants the world to be Twitter, for violence and hate to be everywhere, and everywhere to be their mom’s basement.

True but not. Ignore faces, watch structure. When we had human editors running few regional monopolies, novices like Rogan were rare. But a robot editor sorting millions of indy creators can’t conceive of expertise. It just optimizes for ad clicks, regardless of consequence. And now people are dead.
one of my strongest beliefs is that we're in our situation right now bc some of the most prominent talking heads (e.g. joe rogan, andrew schulz) are learning about politics in their 40s and 50s, instead of their teens and early 20s, and we have to go along for the ride as they learn basic things
