Sunday reading: What is “Un-American”?

We must acknowledge America’s history of state authoritarianism and racial violence – but also dare to claim its aspirational tradition of egalitarian democracy.

Let’s Make MAGA un-American, finally.

Some thoughts from my new piece:

Wut?!? Reference to the hotel manager himself saying there was an "obstructed console" that covered up a key word in the Constitution that nobody noticed in the microfilm is hurting my brain because I don't understand the flow of reality in this story and the actual document is on full view in D.C.

I guess this is cool but I also just finished reading “The Every” by Dave Eggers and now I have doubts. IYKYK.
Finland is exceptional in measuring GHG emissions down to everyday consumption. I have an app where I see the climate impacts of my grocery shopping. North Karelia has full data on household emissions.

Nordic grid electricity is already low-carbon, so consumption choices in other domains matter.
We have great emissions data from various state organisations on every sector, including demand-side GHGs, even down to the regions. yle.fi/a/74-20156241

Good piece.
His attacks on the midterms are real and dangerous… and aren’t going to work. Running down the case for an optimistic threat assessment @theunpopulist.net :

The Super Bowl halftime show performed mostly in Spanish took away this white man’s “whiteness.”
Trump nominated a legit white nationalist to a top post at the State Department. I asked him some basic questions about his belief in the “erasure of white culture”. Watch this embarrassing, fumbling answer. Like he has never before been asked to explain his views.

Green Day is now a unit measurement when describing how much the NFL hates Trump.

To wit: They hate him 3 Green Days.

Work that into your own lexicon.

Next time somebody tries to get me to justify the existence of the humanities, I’ll just point out how for the past two Super Bowls we’ve all jumped online and engaged in collective semiotics and hermeneutics of the half-time show as text.

Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

Superlatives fail. Best halftime performance ever?

Hmmm. How will it "illustrate the nation's immigration divide" exactly?
The Super Bowl halftime show, with Bad Bunny showcasing Latin music before a global television audience expected to top 100 million, will illustrate the nation’s immigration divide whether or not the reggaeton star delivers an explicit political message.
The enthusiasm — and scorn — surrounding Bad Bunny’s star turn at the Super Bowl
The halftime show will illustrate the nation’s immigration divide whether or not the reggaeton star makes an explicit message about Trump’s deportation drive.

"Prisencolinensinainciusol" by Adriano Celentano was played in the post-Parade of Nations banger of a dance number (starring Sabrina Impacciatore) and the NBC commentators didn't remark on it. An Italian classic. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RObu...

Everyone in the White House involved in any way with that vile, sickening racist Trump post must be fired immediately: everyone in the communications department, everyone in the press office, every deputy chief of staff, everyone involved up and down the line. Not one more tax dollar for this filth.
BREAKING: President Trump removes a racist video depicting the Obamas as apes. The White House initially defended the post, then blamed it on a staffer.
Trump shares racist video depicting the Obamas as monkeys
The White House defended Trump's post, saying it was "from an internet meme video depicting President Trump as the King of the Jungle."

Was driving my kids to school and the first thing on the radio was reporting about Trump's video depicting the Obamas as apes and I think many people still don't fully appreciate what it means to have to raise Black children in a country where the president is so brazenly and consistently racist

"praying it was fake" what does that mean? It's literally right there on his truth social account and the White House press secretary defended it on the record?

For all the reasons you are thinking of (and maybe some you're not), this has been a HARD year for many people who live in Washington. That's making the decision to gut the parts of the Post (metro, sports) that cover the region as a place that people *live* extra hard to take.

the violence we are witnessing every day in Minneapolis and elsewhere has proven deeply unpopular. It is indecent, arbitrary and cruel. Its tactics violate our rights as Americans to protest our government. Its purpose violates our moral conscience as human beings.
Lies, violence and the American state
Trump abhors democracy because it allows ordinary Americans to reject his lies. Even worse for Trump, it allows us to reject him.

Army Ranger veteran: "This has all of the signs from every fascist movement in history that we're going to lose the opportunity to resist."
Ian Austin, an Army veteran, was arrested for protesting ICE in Minneapolis. But he’s continued protesting. Senior reporter @julialurie.bsky.social spoke to him.

“When they say, ‘Why would you be out here?’ How the fuck could I not be out here?” he says. “My nation is under attack."

Such a good piece. "Minnesotans are insisting that their neighbors are their neighbors whether they were born in Minneapolis or Mogadishu. That is, arguably, a deeply Christian philosophy, one apparently loathed by some of the most powerful Christians in America."
Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
