CHAPTER 1: TO TRANSCEND rain falls on an abandoned manufacturing facility in forested hills. windows are broken, delivery trucks sit idle, grass peeks through the asphalt, and ivy scales the walls. graffiti reads “FUCK WORK” and “WE ARE NOT DRONES” and “GO HOME AND LIVE”. newer graffiti appears in blue and red with doodles of silly faces and “hewwo”. on the second floor is an employee lounge where a note reads “15 Min Max PER SHIFT!”. in the window, a young catgirl lights a candle. aurelie: Aaaalmost ready… inside the lounge, aurelie rummages in her backpack,standing around lit candles and a magic circle drawn on the floor. aurelie: Hey quit that, come sit in the circle. olivia: ‘M thirsty though. olivia tries the water cooler, which dispenses dust and a fly into her paper cone. she drops it and flumps into the circle. olivia: Tch. Hey Aurelie? aurelie: Yeah Liv? olivia: Why’d they get rid of magic? aurelie: They didn’t get /rid/ of magic, that’s impossible. Once you awaken your power, it’s a part of you forever. olivia: That’s not what I meant. Why’s it banned? Or /mostly/ banned. Since you’re being pedantic. aurelie: Well… there were some accidents, you know. Explosions, assassinations, plagues, wars, that kind of stuff. olivia fearfully imagines a feral dragon breathing fire over a village also being zapped by a robed wizard high in a tower. aurelie, setting strange bagged ingredients on the counter next to a mortar and pestle: –But they really /shouldn’t/ have banned it! Look, it took centuries to figure out mundane means to replicate even /basic/ spells. Like this! olivia, sulking: Doesn’t look basic to me… aurelie, pouring fluid over the mixed ingredients in the mortar: I think they were probably just jealous of mages having cool powers. So they turned the wizard colleges into boring normie ones, broke up the witches’ covens, made it illegal to cast on people… Or cast in public, or mess with your -skin, or do /anything/ cool… ‘S really dumb, just pretending that whole /era/ never existed. olivia: So… aren’t we gonna get in trouble? aurelie: Fenestra–/Wait./ Do you hear that? olivia freezes and trembles. a pink hand reaches from out of frame to boop her shoulder. olivia: WAUGH!! the hand is aurelie’s, which had reached through a portal. olivia slaps it away. olivia: /Aurelie!!/ What the /heck!!/ aurelie, laughing and wiping away a tear: Okay, okay, sorry. We’re fine. That was mean. But funny. aurelie ruffles olivia’s hair. she crosses her arms, blushing and fuming. aurelie: But you see? /I’ve/ never gotten in trouble. They probably haven’t enforced magic law in centuries. I bet no one knows how! aurelie: Look, I’m a /hundred/ percent sure this will work. But just say the word, ‘n we’ll erase the circle and toss this goop. The mundane option is still there–y’know, pills, shots, surgery. What’ll it be, Liv? olivia sighs and smiles: I… I trust you, Aurelie. And–thanks for going to all this trouble just for me. It means a lot. aurelie: Heehee! Yeah, it’s for you, naturally–but I’m /also/ here for the light show. aurelie lights the mortar contents which take on a cyan flame. blue smoke wafts out of the bowl and around the pages as the candles, now giving pink and blue light, float with their saucers around the pair. an unnatural glow emanates out the window. olivia starts to change as lettering on her shroud glows and the magic circle alights. aurelie works the smoke around her arms, channeling energy. aurelie: Of course, with a specialist from the /high magic/ era, we wouldn’t have needed the shroud, which could’ve saved us a /lot/ of time, or the candles, or the incense, or even the circle. But each component makes the spell that much /stronger./ /And/ less prone to blowback. And there’s one /last/ element in my favor… They wrote that a better mage kept half a mind to their spell, and half to their /ambitions./ Easy enough for me! Cause when /I/ grow up, I’m gonna be the one who brings magic back. And /everyone/ will know the name– ???: Aurelie Spellmire? aurelie, now an adult, sits anxiously in a pale green room, wearing earrings and a suit with a skirt. behind her, a screen showing upcoming events lists the date and time as monday, 14th of march, year 1008, 11:34.

trying to remember to live and love now instead of spending my time grieving for something that hasn't happened yet

i've just been crying most of today because my mom's cancer is getting worse i don't know how to spend my time. i don't know how to learn something from all this. i think i'm sad and scared and nothing feels right i've already been through it once when my dad passed from cancer, but i still don't know how to live while the people i love are dying. how do i do this right? i think i'm over thinking things. i have nothing to fear. i have everything to cherish. oh moon, am I living my life right? maybe!

queer spaces are so overly racially biased it makes me upset every time.

the lack of boosting black positivity or just interacting with black art is upsetting. black art, people, and characters aren't viewed in the same desirability as white characters.
