The hottest phrase in the music business is "super fans."

Streaming services are building more expensive tiers for them. Record labels are hawking apps & merchandise.

I examined these plans -- and whether they will work -- for this week's newsletter.

NEW: Spotify has said 70% of eligible creators and networks are uploading video podcasts to the platform, but, in reality, few of the top podcasts are doing so.

Of the top 50 shows in the US, 37 regularly post to YouTube. Only eight also uploaded their episodes to Spotify.

This classic work in the history of nationalism argues that the rise of widely available print (esp. newspapers) made it possible for geographically dispersed groups of people to imagine themselves as a roughly coherent entity called "a nation" in which there was an ongoing conversation.

Feels like I'm just posting to the void since I'm just getting started here, but why not. I write a weekly newsletter, and this week I write about how far away from reading and critical thinking we’ve come. It's lacking in our education, COVID learning loss, social media attention spans, all of it.
We need to get back to reading and critical thinking

This!! No system is infallible, and creating mechanisms to derisk future negative outcomes is so huge 💙💙
What's happened to X proves the need for Bluesky. The future company is a possible adversary. We make decisions knowing that we won't always be here or won't always be able to control the company's decisions. It's why we've given you the freedom of exit to go elsewhere w your followers and data.
one of bluesky’s mottos is “the company is a future adversary,” so we have to design this service in a way that preserves user choice & freedom

users should own their data, identity, and relationships on the social internet, and devs should never get locked out of the ecosystems that they build

The stock of Chegg, a company that provides homework help as a service, has dropped -50% as the CEO admits that ChatGPT is making their business obsolete.

This is only the first of many companies that will be disrupted by generative AI. This is truly an iPhone moment for tech.
