I mean it was standard practice in the UK for me not to have the right to vote in 1917. Does McDonald feel women, therefore, should accept the standards of those times in the interests of placatory diplomacy? To say nothing of the rights of colonised people.

The "experiment in open borders" claim also featured in Starmer's "Island of Strangers" speech, which was equally dishonest.

We will never get a sane immigration debate until leaders talk truthfully to the public about why immigration happens.

We're light years from that.
bsky.app/profile/robe...
If you're going to attack immigration levels in 2022-3, you need to say something about provision for Ukraine & Hong Kong (which Labour backed).

Blaming a "one-nation experiment in open borders" is not levelling with voters or restoring trust.

It's telling the kind of lie on which populism thrives

A key part of the so-called "Boriswave" was a generous policy towards Ukraine & Hong Kong.

Labour (rightly) backed that.

This rhetoric just feeds populist claims of an establishment conspiracy to "experiment" on "the British people".

It will not be Sir Keir Starmer KC who benefits from that mood.

Starmer keeps using this line, & it's bonkers.

Most importantly, it's untrue: the party that ended Free Movement, ran the "hostile environment" & made Suella Braverman Home Sec did not run "an experiment in open borders".

It's also politically mad. Voters who believe this will not vote for Starmer

If the North had seen the same transport investment as London under the previous government, it would have received £140bn more – enough to build seven Elizabeth Lines.

While London received £1,183 per person, the North only saw £486 per person.
