Dear new followers. I've removed the paywall permanently from this piece, which is a chapter from my novel Villager, told entirely in the form of an online village message board. If you like it, you'll probably like the book. If you don't, you won't...

The Village Message Board
Its authenticity was discredited because of his reputation, but also because he was quick with gin at the time and wearing an item of knitwear back to front.

Greetings from Kyiv.

I hadn’t been to Sophia Square for over a month.
The last time, there was a Christmas tree here.

Standing there today, I felt it deeply:
we survived this winter.
We did it.

Please think very, very carefully before posting photos/videos of young children on any social media platform. This is even more important given what AI can do and everything we know about the people who control these platforms.

We must keep children safe. ✌️

🌊 Look at the gorgeous cover for Brigid Lowe's #Shiver: The Lessons of the Lochs!

This is a love-letter to Caledonia - its flowers and rocks, its bogs and legends and hills - and to its chill waters, which swept Brigid off her feet only to carry her back home again.

Will the winter never be over,
Will the dark days never go?
Must the buttercup and the clover
Be always hid under the snow?

Ah, lend me your little ear, love!
Hark! 'tis a beautiful thing;
The weariest month of the year, love,
Is shortest and nearest to spring.

It’s especially sweet when our ex-orphans give birth to girls. Elephants are a matriarchal species, which means that females form lifelong family units. When little Sia is all grown up and raising babies of her own, they will still be walking side by side.
