Yesterday I'm sitting on the reception bench when a guy sits next to me. Without looking at me, he says, with all deadly seriousness to no one in particular: "Now, the question is, who soiled my pants?"

The best part of it was when I held a bear and made it wave at one of our old timers. He has a friendly smile he always gives me and others, but I watched that smile melt into something softer, younger, full of memories of a youth long gone. And then he waved back at the bear.

If you bring a bag of stuffed animals to a men's homeless shelter, you will see a bunch of macho, no-nonsense men instantly become children. It's moments like this that makes me love my job. To see them drop their guards and become playful, laughing, slightly naughty little boys is just amazing.

I mean, the secret police has an official title in other fascist regions, as well. It never stopped them from arresting people without due process, or making them disappear altogether.
