An easy way to explain luddites:

Textile manufacturers brought in machines that could do in an hour what would have taken 12 hours by hand.

And then, tried to keep paying the now 12x more productive workers the same wages as before.

That's it, that was the problem luddites had. Not complex.

Schrödinger's Hero
Defense begins, “This case, ladies and gentlemen, is about a sandwich. A sandwich that according to Agent Lairmore somehow both exploded on his chest in a spray of mustard and onions but also landed intact on the ground still in its Subway wrapper.”

I'm living in a timeline where a priest is cross examined for being shot in the head with pepper balls and a lawyer is being tried for hucking a sandwich.

This feels entirely surreal.

Someday, I'd like an MP to stand up in parliament and ask why the *opinions* of a small subset of cisgender people matter more to this government than the safety, health, and dignity of every transgender person in the country.

one of my least favorite new publishing "truths" is that books only deserve consistent marketing & publicity if they are already doing well, it's the new "needs experience to get experience" 🤡

What's that, Aceco? You took a job from a grifter who is known for never, ever paying people?

And then he didn't pay YOU? You, the company who demolished the East Wing?

This is my shocked face. 😐

Wondering why no one likes your posts anymore, even among your friends? It's because @jay.bsky.team and team have decided to hide a huge amount of content from all of our feeds by default.

Here's how to turn it off.

the fact that Sandwich Guy is facing this 'wich trial at all is evidence of subpar justice. he is a hero being put through the judicial grinder. i hope the jury wraps up a not guilty verdict without delay or loafing around

The post from the Reagan Foundation is just complete gibberish.

The ad did not, in fact, misrepresent Reagan's views. But the idea that anyone needs the Reagan Foundation's goddamn permission to use the publicly broadcast official remarks of a former president and/or edit them for brevity is crazy

When Massachusetts passed a "millionaires tax" in 2023, conservatives claimed the rich would flee.

But two years later, they haven't — and MA has collected $5.7B for infrastructure and public education.

A reminder that positive change can still happen at the state level.

i'm already doing my part :)
Speaking of which, I was addressing a conclave of editors the other day and was asked what I thought of "themself" as a singular reflexive pronoun, and I said "As a copy editor I'm not supposed to put my thumb on the language scale, but we all need to make 'themself' happen." So let's do that.
I'll assume that the person who asked me to do them a massive favor and could barely bring themself to say thank you once I'd done it—and done it quite well, I might add—will one day soon ask for another massive favor, and that's when the fun will begin.
