The Sentinel-1 mission – which provides radar vision for the Copernicus Earth observation programme – has a new addition to its family of satellites, with the arrival in orbit of Sentinel-1D, the last of the groundbreaking first generation. The launch took place at 22:02 CET (18:02 local time), on Tuesday, 4 November, on board an Ariane 6 launcher from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.

So much new stuff from SWOT that should be in there, but we will have to write the papers first. Here is a teaser from chapter 5. And if you are wondering what is H_L=5 km,T > 18 s, well that is "some" wave height.

Here SWH is estimated from two instruments on board the SWOT satellite: KaRIN and Poseidon-3C
with two different method (Bohé et al., 2025). KaRIN also provides a map of the sea surface elevation,
shown in grey scale, that resolves swells with periods longer than 18 s. The large values in the very
patchy map of SWH correspond to groups of long waves. These long waves were generated by storm
Eddie (Ardhuin et al., 2025). More of this data can be viewed using the Ocean Virtual Laboratory, https://odl.bzh/2GsA5tZQ ).

fingers of higer waves are caused by refraction of swell over currents.The first time we saw this kind of feature was on Envisat ASAR.

7-day composite of wave heights from Scotland to France (dark red is 8 m) from SWOT KaRIN instrument (22 to 28 August 2025), showing land shadows and effects of currents on wave heights. In particular "fingers" of higher waves are pointing in the wave propagation direction and are caused by a focusing of waves in currents located "upwave" of the measurement.

Just one food, beef, can account for 40-50% or more of the GHG emissions related to an organization’s food purchases.

A reality check for me was working with students on an internal carbon accounting platform that Bon App our food provider uses. Beef was less than 5% of our purchases but around 50% of our food emissions even with international work to be plant forward.
