Parts of the Elephant is OUT NOW!

It's free! It's short! It's moody!

It's got awesome art by @cspstuff.bsky.social!

Download it on Steam or Itch, so you can make bad decisions and see weird things:

Weird things are happening in the Elephant Hotel. It's getting late, you're getting drunk, and moments in the lives of strangers are scattered around you like spilled puzzle pieces. Can you put it all...

GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON'T DIE was a fucking fun ride.

some of the jokes about teenagers were tired and low-rent, but overall the movie owns the preachiness inherent in its own premise, and delivers a really enjoyable genre flick with a lot of awesome visuals.

go see. would happily watch again.

i keep getting recommended random jpop thirst trap reels

and by random i mean "shirose from WHITE JAM, specifcally and only"

and every time i click in, i find myself thinking that there's such a big gap between his fits and the music

when i was a kid, i remember reading "the sign of the seahorse" and wondering why they chose to make the big bad guy a grouper, which "just looks like a normal fish". foolish
It's hard to grasp how large this grouper is until you see it in comparison to the ship's toilet on the left.

This appears to be an Atlantic goliath grouper or 'itajara' (Epinephelus itajara). They can reach 800 lbs (350 kg) & 8 feet long (2.5 m)

Let's talk about these gentle giants.

i think my hot take is "kids shouldn't swear" is primarily just an outgrowth of "kids should be deferential to adults by default", which i don't actually see as a moral imperative - or even noble/laudable at all, and therefore not something we should be pressuring industry to enforce.

I'm pretty sure I know. They aren't. We're not going to really be able to make a lot of progress in dealing with the implications of this tech unless and until we get rid of all this "woo-woo" talk about LLMs. Anthropic pushing this line is PR, unserious.

i'm very much loving how Silent Hill f and Silent Hill: Townfall are leaning into a vision of "Silent Hill" that's less about the history/pantheon/etc. of one specific place, and more about a specific type of story, the way our minds and the places we're trapped in become synonymous
Very much here for Silent Hill: Townfall.

one of the first lovey-dovey notes i wrote when i started dating my husband was attempting to say "i love you" in phyrexian.

we still say "i want your parts to be my parts" to each other

"i should test how complicated RNG seeds can get in my game. i'll write a quick script to increment it 10k times and see"

(immediate result)

"not too bad! lemme try with a way bigger number. like, idk, a trillion"

(still running)

"ah, right, that...wasn't very smart of me"

(still running)

"hm"

we're going to see more of this, especially for platforms with sizeable underage user bases, as legislation is requiring it more and more.

trust, these platforms are not driving users away and figuring out how to process more PII than they need to just for kicks. they're being legally mandated to.

yep - the business case here is low-effort spam. that's not a new innovation, it's just more accessible to become a low-effort spammer now.

if your intended business model is spamming people, you're either an anti-consumer cynic, or a get-rich-quick sucker.

but you're not an innovator or pioneer.
This article is incredible. It says everything us actual authors have been saying for years, but with a smile on its face.

“If you hide that there’s A.I., it sells just fine,” she said.

Uh huh? Tell me more. Like how you published 19 novels to sell 20,000 copies. An average of 1000 copies a title.
“If I can generate a book in a day, and you need six months to write a book, who’s going to win the race?” God this is bleak

i keep coming back to this.

IRON LUNG is a game whose narrative is mostly relayed through mechanical choices (repetition, isolation, obfuscation, disorientation), not verbalized character moments or dramatic scenes.

SILENT HILL 2's plot is essentially already a conventional movie.

and YET...
IRON LUNG was good! i really enjoyed it, and was super impressed by what markiplier pulled off as its director/writer/star/primary editor???

can't help but compare it to RETURN TO SILENT HILL - a more expensive remake of a game with a more cinematic story, that floundered in almost every way.

christian is completely right - as an amateur/hobbyist #gamedev (and one who is starting with visual novels in particular), this was a very helpful read.
Also, @mammonmachine.bsky.social has a great write up on making a short story/novella length VN in a "short" period that I like to send to beginner game writers/narrative designers.

i still cannot believe that the ttrpg for fucking NEOPETS is specifying how many action points per round of combat it takes to retrieve an item from inventory (it's 2)
the neopets ttrpg kickstarter is going great

new #gamedev achievement unlocked:

came up with a great solution for my design,

implemented, went out to the gym and lunch,

realized on the walk back that my solution was completely unnecessary and overcomplicated,

got home and removed it.

Finally, I can break silence! I did a lot of creature design work for this show (collaborating, of course, with the production team) and think the animals are looking pretty good here! This was a lot of fun to work on - will be watching on Mar. 6!
