The list of most relevant themes we identified is: 1. Rhetoric of inevitability and technological determinism: presenting the adoption and use of (generative) AI as a fait accompli. 2. Exaggerated narratives: overstating the general capabilities of the technology, or leaving out that certain seemingly impressive capabilities can only be achieved under very specific experimental conditions. 3. Spurious comparison to human intelligence or Anthropomorphism: presenting AI as if it thinks or reason like a human. 4. Ethics and critical washing: presenting AI as being ethically or critically examined but doing so only superficially and inconsequentially. 5. Wishful thinking and uncertain feasibility: assuming desired outcomes or functionality despite lacking realistic evidence they can be achieved. 6. GenAI is presented as indispensable: portraying AI as essential even when simpler or non-AI solutions are sufficient. 7. Unrealistic and ill-defined conditions: formulating requirements for adoption and use that are functionally impossible or too demanding to be met, psychologically implausible to follow, or set unclear boundaries for acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, which could easily create inconsistencies. 8. Resources as propaganda: resources for students, faculty, and other stakeholders are made available but only for incentivizing different degrees of use of genAI. 9. AI Overkill: Substitution or replacement of tasks for which the technology was not designed; from tutoring to teaching to research, everything must be now with AI, even if it is not adequate. Due to space limitations, rather than discussing all of the themes superficially, this essay addresses only the first four, which, in our view, are the most critical and the most urgently in need of critical scrutiny. Ich glaube, viele Leute unterschätzen das Ausmaß der aktuellen Medienkrise. Ich sage es immer wieder: Entweder wir finden rasch Wege, Qualitätsmedien ordentlich zu finanzieren, oder wir werden die Demokratie nicht halten können. Guter Journalismus ist systemrelevant und wahnsinnig unterbezahlt.

My photo shows a slightly ovoid-shaped tool knapped from yellow-tinged rock crystal. It is mounted for display against a grey background. Described as a scraper (racloir) by the Musée d’Archéologie Nationale, it measures 6 x 3.3 x 1.5 cm. It was recovered from a Mousterian (Neanderthal) level in the Abri Des Merveilles rockshelter in France. The rock shelter was excavated by the American School of Prehistoric Research for a number of seasons from 1924 onwards, led by George Grant MacCurdy who documented that this rock crystal tool (and six others) were excavated from the lower level of the shelter together with a lithic assemblage (flint handaxes, scrapers and points) identified as Mousterian i.e. associated with Neanderthals. He suggested the original source of the rock crystal was some 90 miles north of the Merveilles rockshelter “near to and beyond the headwaters of the Vézère in the direction of Limousin and Puy-de-Dome” He suggested the rock crystal was either brought to the cave, or was carried away from its source by the river Vézère and then picked up from the riverbed by neanderthals. The info label at the Musée d’Archéologie Nationale reads: ‘Neanderthals were the first to show their interest in non-utilitarian objects: collection and transport of fossils and minerals, use of dyes such as ochre or haematite, choice of aesthetic raw materials for cut tools, such as rock crystal from Sergeac or opal jasper from Fontmaure’

Consider mere-ly this one statistic being bandled about by the producers: There are already more than 325 hours of "Star Trek" productions, including the original series (which began in 1966), the seven feature films and the television spinoffs, "Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)." And now, with the centerpiece of the new United Paramount Network, Trekkers can focus their notoriously intense scrutiny on "Star Trek: Voy-ager," the first of the series created after the death of the "Star Trek" creator, Gene Roddenberry. Much will be made of the political correct-ness of this new venture, not least in that the captain of this ship is a woman, but "Star Trek" has long been a multicultural champion of erasing prejudices of all sorts. This time it just goes a bit further. After all, it's the 24th century. Capt. Kathryn Janeway, played with unmistakable authority by Kate Mulgrew, takes the U.S.S. Voyager to search for a ship belonging to the Maquis, Federation colonists unhap-py with a new treaty. The problem is that the captain's chief of security is an undercover agent on the missing ship. But the Voyager, with 15 decks and "bioneural" circuitry, is soon swept up in a displacement wave that pushes the star ship 70,000 light years away on the other side of the galaxy. The Federationists and the Maquis are forced to work together for survival. It's an ingenious concept, bringing the series back to its early days of anything-can-happen suspense. Cap-tain Janeway spells it out: "We're alone in an uncharted part of the galaxy. We have no idea of the dan-gers we'll have to face. Somewhere we'll find a way back." Did you know that some Nobel Peace Prize medals have been passed on after the award was given? And the medal displayed at the Nobel Peace Center is actually on loan and originally belonged to Christian Lous Lange, Norway’s first Peace Prize laureate. But one truth remains.
