To the people defending Senate Dems by saying "they were never going to succeed in getting the ACA benefits extended anyway": you're saying the Senate Dems were either too stupid to know that, or were lying to their base all along.

Alt: "Okay, but that's worse... You do get how that's worse, right?"

I'd respond in thread, but it looks like I've been prevented from doing so. Curious.
There's no "suddenly". The Republicans were increasingly desperate to end the shutdown the longer it dragged on. Why do you think Trump was pushing Thune to nuke the filibuster?

You mean the same group that instituted these drastic policies were suddenly going to cave?

Speaking as someone who desperately wanted just one actual Republican concession in exchange for over a month of lost income, I have zero patience for "AKSHUALLY THIS WAS A WIN FOR DEMS" posts right now.

Do you believe it was specifically them who caved rather than a collective decision?
The fact that none of them are up for reelection for years seem to suggest they were just providing cover for an overall change in strategy.

Interview every one of the eight Dems and ask them one fucking question:
Why didn't you just continue to say no until the Republicans caved?

If at this point you don't have even the tiniest suspicion that the Dems are just a controlled opposition party in bed with moneyed corporate interests, then I congratulate you on having more childhood innocence than my entire collection of lop-ear plushies.

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.
Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.

Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

Just called my MD senators to say that I do not want them to give the Republicans an inch on the ACA subsidies — even if it means extending the shutdown, which will continue to leave me with no income.
I have no idea if anyone is processing their voice mail but not much else I can do.

Ignoring Turley's hand-wringing about partisanship, this quote from Chris Murphy shows that some Dems get it:
“If [Dems] surrender without having gotten anything ... I worry that it will be hard to ... get them back up off the mat in time for next fall’s election"

Reporting from @ddayen.bsky.social says Schumer almost orchestrated a team of Democrats to concede to Republicans without any hard commitments. Then his caucus, including some members of a supposed working group, balked.

DO NOT CLICK THE LINK.
Bluesky would NEVER send a DM like this and make you scared. This would come through email and would have a more professional email than this.
