"The greatest mistake is to imagine that the human being is an autonomous individual. The secret freedom which you can supposedly enjoy under a despotic government is nonsense, because your thoughts are never entirely your own." — Orwell, April 28, 1944

Always a good time to remind Americans just how bad half of them are at making rational/moral/competent electoral choices.
Good Friday news:
“It’s not a secret. There’s no sugarcoating it. It’s a pending, looming disaster heading our way.”

“We are facing almost certain defeat.”

“The chances are Republicans will go down and will go down hard.”

I happen to like Jasmine Crockett's feisty personality, but I also want to rid the Senate of John Cornyn. Unfortunately, it's quite unlikely she can do that for sad, but quite obvious reasons.

James Talarico is just as feisty in his own way, and he has a better chance to de-Cornyn Texas. Simple.
I don’t have to live in Texas to know that Republicans desperately wanted her to enter the race and baited her into doing it.
Do you live in Texas, Tom? Maybe stop thinking you know what us Texans want and let the democratic process play out :)

Totally agree with this. As a Tapper critic myself, the whole point of genuine criticism of how journalists do their jobs is to urge them to do better.

Unless you're just whining for the hell of it.
This is not related to the point that I was making, which is that right now, at this moment, Tapper did a good thing that is not done often enough, which is a deep dive on a crazy Trump speech.
Unpopular opinion, but pimping your book about the previous president’s health *while avoiding any discussion of the current president’s health as the current president was turning America into a fascist country* deserved criticism.

And most people will never hear of this outrage.
The US voted with Russia, China and N. Korea against most of the civilized world. This is where we are at.

Oh, last count about half the voters.
Their closing message to Indiana: change your maps to artificially benefit the President's political party or 'roads will not be paved' as punishment.

They are openly saying this.

Who would want to live in a country that works like that?

This should be the biggest story in the country right now. The sitting US President was extorting state lawmakers from his own party by threatening to withhold public money if they didn’t gerrymander for him.

I don’t know how else to say it…

Yeah, but despite being a liar, she's a "devout" Catholic. So, the "stupid" charge is still plausible.
It’s important to remember that Laura Ingraham went to Dartmouth. She’s not as stupid as she sounds. She’s just a shameless liar.

I signed this petition. But I'm not confident MAGA Republicans in Missouri won't find a way through the courts to stop it from getting on the ballot. These are bad people acting in bad faith--You know, they're Republicans.
🚨BREAKING: More than 300,000 Missourians have signed a petition demanding that the gerrymander be put to a statewide referendum, advocacy organization People Not Politicians announced as it delivered those signatures to the state government Tuesday. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

Rand Paul on his healthcare plan: "What if you could join Costco? Costco has 44m members and if one person negotiated for all 44 and they bought a group plan like Toyota or General Motors does, they would be the largest collective entity in the country. They would drive prices down by sheer might."

"You signed an executive order on looking into the reason so many people get fcked when you fck them. Sir."
Every real economist in America warned at the time he was imposing tariffs that it would affect each of these things, and deportations have affected the ability of farmers to access labor. This is all happening because of one man.

"When democracy returns" is doing some heavy work here.
The Supreme Court, Presidency, Senate and two party system are all quite anti-democratic institutions as presently constructed.

Our institutions are not only incapable of preventing tyranny—they’re currently enabling it.

When democracy returns, we need to reform our political system.

This is the new MTG. Sounds like the old MTG.

LESLEY STAHL: You contributed to the toxic culture. You were out there pounding, insulting people

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: You've contributed to it as well

STAHL: I want you to respond to what you have done in terms of insulting people

MTG: I'd like for you to respond to that

Hilarious. Who needs atheists?
WELKER: Lawmakers say the 2 men appeared to raise their arms potentially to surrender. Why did Admiral Bradley interpret these actions as anything other than them trying to survive?

This appalling document will get very little coverage in the hurricane of shitty news this weekend, but it signals a dramatic American turn toward neo-fascist ideology.

And it likely won't be fixable in the future. Simply put, we are no longer a trustworthy, stable ally of Enlightenment Europe.
This was the project of Fascism in 1936.

Just who would enforce this? Nobody. Same with any other violations.

And the Emoluments clauses? They are laughably dead now.

Really? The entire chain of command could be held liable?

Uh, by whom exactly? The pro-criminal Tr-mp Justice Dept? The pro-Tr-mp military, who even if they tried to do the right thing would see a pardon thwart their efforts?

There will be ZERO accountability.
