Archaeologist Francisco Estrada-Belli estimates the population of the classic-era Maya lowlands to have been 16 million people — higher than on the Italian peninsula during the peak of the Roman Empire.
Apocalypse no: how almost everything we thought we knew about the Maya is wrong
For many years the prevailing debate about the Maya centred upon why their civilisation collapsed. Now, many scholars are asking: how did the Maya survive?

Yup. This is also why I get annoyed when people start suggesting "golden age" science fiction titles to people who are new the genre and are asking for suggestions. You want to turn a modern 15-year-old off science fiction forever, recommend stories that were old when her grandparents were her age.
When people ask how to get into GA SF I always say that the right way is via some of those fat "Best Of" short fiction collections

This is not surprising. Nearly everyone I met while I was there had a VPN and downloaded pirated material. Most Russians openly mocked attempts at government censorship.
“Heated Rivalry” is finding unexpected success in Russia — the homeland of one of its lead characters — even though it is not officially available for streaming and LGBTQ+ content is heavily censored there.
‘Heated Rivalry’ is a hit in Russia, where LGBTQ+ content is heavily censored
Russian audiences connected deeply with the “Heated Rivalry” character Ilya Rozanov, whose country would never accept him or allow him to live in a relationship with another man.

It’s every period drama of contested love between star-crossed lovers but updated to the strict social norms of competitive masculinity. The actors really sell what could have been a sappy romance.
