4yo (after watching lots of Scooby Doo): “I’m going to Chinese class in Unicorn Land. But it’s gonna be a little different, because there’s a lot of spooky things. Like there’s one thing that flies around, but it’s just a person in a unicorn costume.”

I wish there were a James Beard award for sound control in restaurants.
The James Beard awards, the "Oscars" of food and restaurant awards, announced their semifinalists last week.

While most nominees are in more hip parts of DC, or in the suburbs, 2 Amys in Cathedral Heights was nominated for Outstanding Chef.

#2Amys #CathedralHeights
Here Are the 2026 James Beard Awards Restaurant and Chef Semifinalists for D.C.
Local chefs that made the preliminary cut include Marcus DC’s Anthony Jones, Moon Rabbit’s Susan Bae, and more

as always I am shocked by the comparatively low population densities in Europe in the medieval/early modern periods. London, far and away the biggest city in 14th century Britain, was maybe 100,000 people. The British Isles had 5-6 million people circa 1300 (Rubin's estimate); it's ~75 million today
