Among the things that bother me about Vermeule is that he's American aristocracy, and I'm from nowhere and nothing, and I believe in democracy and he doesn't. I'm a product of postwar commitment to high-quality mass education. He's a rich parochial stooge of inherited stooginess.

After saying absolutely not for 6 months, I said yes to the slushie robot and we had an amazing pop-up slushie bar for friends and neighbors

‘TIS THE FUCKING SEASON!!
My year-end gift, a booklet annual of poems titled Malebolge, is printing this week and will mail soon.

In the ancient tradition of vituperatio, the poem of blame or censure, these little poems are a bit bawdy, a bit nasty, but good fun. Sharp darts aimed at public figures who deserve the shame.

Why didn’t I immediately respond with this one: when I first got to UNC, an amazing librarian reached out to tell me about a trove of ~250 uncatalogued Italian manuscripts that had been sitting in Special Collections for a century…
I think we need a mega thread of everyone's craziest archive stories.

I know disciplinary standards differ, but I've been at this for decades and I've never cited a paper I didn't read. Didn't like, sure; didn't understand, often; kind of drifted off in the middle there, it happens. But didn't read at all? Nah. Come on.

The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was “unanimous.” That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.

All the centers they’re cutting add up to less than $7 million in spending.

UNC athletics budget is $185.4 million for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

I have loved playing on recreational USTA teams & it’s painful to give it up. But I wouldn’t swim at a segregated pool, so

It would be great if local parks and rec departments could set up a portal for coordinating teams and matches, instead of just linking to USTA

Cognitive exams “in front of a large number of doctors and experts who I don’t know”?

Sir those are witnesses

Last time I took multiple cognitive exams I was a medical actor performing psych cases for med students to practice on 🤔
Every part of this is bonkers. The intro is bonkers. The transition to his health is bonkers. The mention that other presidents didn't need cognitive exams is bonkers. The claim that this screening test is somehow hard is bonkers. The idea that criticism of him is treason is bonkers. All of it.
