It's January 2026. Welcome to the UNC system, where you can soon expect an army of Nick Shirleys to show up in classrooms and harass faculty and students thanks to their dimwitted misunderstanding of publicly searchable syllabi. Or as Peter Hans puts it, this is how we rebuild public trust!

Statement Re: OU Discrimination Investigation

Today, my client, Mel Curth, submitted her appeal of the University's Institutional Equity Office finding that she engaged in arbitrary and capricious grading of a student's assignment in violation of that student's religious liberty.

"The policy is meant to prevent students from learning about topics the current administration deems unacceptable. This will deprive students of a robust education and put targets on the backs of faculty who choose to teach such content, despite the risks."

Opinion: UNC's syllabi public-posting mandate erodes academic freedom
Publicly posting syllabi is an effort to prevent the teaching of topics that right-wing actors deem “unacceptable.”

Bari Weiss's censoring 60 Minutes in the name of "building trust" is of a coin with Peter Hans's imposing a pro-doxxing syllabus policy in the name of "rebuilding public trust." They are both the gaslighting actions of political operatives sent to destroy the institutions they lead.
Bari Weiss just sent this Christmas Eve email to the CBS News staff about "building trust," which includes her tripling down on spiking the CECOT piece "to make sure it's comprehensive and fair."

One CBS staffer tells me: "She really has no idea how insulting she comes across."

Paper linked below. The grading criteria, given to students in advance, was based on whether the student demonstrated they read the article and if they provided a reaction to some aspect of it. The student made no effort to do either; they blathered about the Bible.

Restructuring with a hard r
I feel like "academic hiring" discourse is always kind of downstream of the fact that in the 50s we started building a giant public system to make a college education almost universally available and in the 80s and 90s we started taking it apart to go back to the only-the-rich model

It’s the entire point. There’s no plan to make this meaningful for students. No plan to use it administratively. Its design and implementation signals its only real intent. It’s best and easiest use case is for systematic harassment and to scare faculty into complying in advance.
We know the students don’t read the syllabuses. So who will? Right-wing activists looking for excuses to hound profs.

The fact that the System Office have spent the most time talking about the need to expose syllabus contents to public scrutiny and have offered only nominal arguments about student convenience is really telling. Recall Peter Hand's op-ed, and the blathering about "the public's trust"

The New School owns about a billion dollars worth of art, most of which is not on display. They could sell the two Warhols they own and raise $100 million tomorrow. But they’d rather close academic departments.
New School “administrators have started to implement a plan to close, overhaul or merge about 30 academic programs or majors; pause nearly all admissions to doctoral programs; and offer buyouts or early retirement to what professors say is about 40 percent of the full-time faculty.”

The UNC System has published the new syllabus policy. It's every bit as bad as you would expect, & as we warned. Poorly thought out. An invitation to bad actors to dox faculty. And serves no educational purpose that could not already be met with existing tools.
