🧵I was surprised to find that people rate representation as more important than equity or efficiency, when asked to assess values for public services. From my latest work with @jaclynpiatak.bsky.social @colt-jensen.bsky.social & @minjungckim.bsky.social

Such sad news. I was fortunate to take an independent study with Beryl @AU_SPA and enjoyed her insights during my time there.

Beryl was an inspiration from being a true pracademic to serving as @APPAM_DC president and as the first female @jpart_journal editor.
We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of scholar, mentor, and previous APPAM President Beryl Radin. Take a look back at her presidential address, learn more about her incredible life, and find out how you can plant a tree in her honor here: ow.ly/cvbq50Vl3bV

New, from me: Trump and Musk are engaged in a broad-based downsizing of government, using that downsizing to selectively target their enemies, while expanding their political power by trading exceptions to the downsizing.

It's a new spoils systems. 🧵

"Individual actions and collective organizing help to remind others that the actions of the Trump administration do not have broad support...Universities, philanthropies, nonprofits, and professional organizations need to remind each other of the power they have, and the principles they stand for."
New, from me: you were told that the threats to free speech came from wokeness. Some compared it to Maoist China.

Now we are witnessing government power being used to silence dissent and censor ideas. Now we know what real society-wide chilling effects look like. 🧵

For over a decade, 18F brought modern, user-centered tech to government. Now, it’s just...gone.

In a new article in @us.theconversation.com I discuss why 18F mattered, what its shutdown means, and the broader implications for government technology and digital service delivery.

How 18F transformed government technology − and why its elimination matters
18F was the US government’s in-house technology consultancy, lauded for saving taxpayer money and improving services. Here’s what it did − and what’s now lost.

My deeply reported story about the five-years-later impact of Trump gutting two research agencies got BURIED in all the news yesterday.

Please read and share it!
During Trump's first term, the USDA gave hundreds of expert agricultural economists and researchers an ultimatum: Relocate across the country on a few weeks' notice, or lose your job. The results were devastating – a generational brain drain. Trump's not done.
