I had a close friend explain this to me this summer as I sobbed into the phone. There is no pulling yourself up by yourself.

You need others. You need help. We need community. We need compassion, and love, and to stop expecting everyone to just get back up after they’re forced down.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Still frames from the Venture Brothers. I have crudely edited some of the words from the original dialogue. Dr Venture is holding a piece of paper and saying "Very cool artwork... Oh, A.I." Now Dr. Venture looks annoyed and says "Great. These pixels are all meaningless." A monarch butterfly is flying towards him but it is completely unrelated to the joke I'm making.

My favorite comment on the FT story
Personally I'd be impressed if they could make something as smart as an ant. Ants only have 250,000 neurons, which is pretty small compared with GPT-5's reputed more than one trillion parameters. And yet ants are able to survive all by themselves in this complex world of ours, without endless infusions of investor capital or government subsidies. I don't think GPT-5 could do that.

Bluesky is pretty nice. What I feel from the TOTALLY ORGANIC Bluesky discourse on Twitter is some people want to scream on your face and force you to put up with it. That's not possible here, so they go back and act like the superior social media is the one fucked to the brim with bots and nazis.
