Link: https://shorturl.at/J9R2z Description text on the left side of the flyer: This talk explores the entangled processes of remembering and forgetting forced migration in postwar Germany through the case of Bubenreuth, a small Bavarian town that in 1949 received over 1,600 expellees from the former Sudetenland. While national narratives long marginalized the memory of these displacements, Bubenreuth presents a striking example of how local communities engage with and transform migration memory. In detail, the talk traces how displaced violin makers from Schönbach came to reshape not only Bubenreuth’s economy but its urban identity. It highlights the negotiations that emerged in shared spaces as arenas where collective memory was produced over time. Following the production of collective memory, the talk foregrounds the social tensions, spatial segregation, and ambivalent narratives that were all part of contemporary local heritage. I will argue that Bubenreuth’s evolving commemorative landscape exemplifies how collective memory is shaped by power, place, and intergenerational negotiation. In doing so, the talk offers insights into the politics of remembrance in rural and small-town settings, shining light on the role of migration memory in reconfiguring local belonging beyond bigger cities in contemporary Europe.
