The Trump admin has sanctioned five individuals for being part of the “censorship industrial complex”: the Orwellian misnomer for efforts to combat harassment and disinfo online. It’s an escalation of a clear trend: weaponizing immigration laws to persecute First Amendment-protected activities.

The Trump administration is now barring 5 Europeans working on countering disinformation from the US — including initiating deportation proceedings against 2 of them, including a former EU commissioner. All in the name of free speech. www.state.gov/releases/off...

Since we’re on the topic of asking people for comment …
In 2021, Bari Weiss famously published a resignation letter by former Smith College librarian Jodi Shaw.

Shortly after, I asked Smith if Weiss had reached out for comment first.

“She did not,” spokesperson Stacey Schmeidel said via email.

Weiss’ agents declined my requests for comment.

🚨Judge Xinis finds that, incredibly, Mr. Abrego Garcia was never ordered deported in 2019. She notes that every since this saga began all the way back in March, the government has NEVER been able to produce any evidence that the immigration judge actually issued a removal order.

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

In renaming USIP to DJTIP, his is literally replacing "United States" with himself. A real "l'état c'est moi" moment
Starting momentarily: Trump attends peace agreement signing ceremony with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo at the US Institute of Peace building in DC (which the administration is now calling—without a hint of irony—the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.)

NEW: You've read a lot about immigrants kidnapped, forcibly detained, and held in ICE facilities -- what about the immigrants *trying* to leave the country? Turns out its wildly difficult for them too.

don't miss this from @telliotter.bsky.social:
The Trump Administration Wants Immigrants to Self-Deport. It’s a Shit Show
The Trump administration has been virtually begging immigrants in the US to self-deport, even offering money. But some immigrants say it’s been nearly impossible.

NEW — I spoke to DoorDash about the White House claiming the company's report shows "inflation has been tamed" and whether that's an interpretation one should make. An economist also weighed in, pointing out dictatorships use data obfuscation as a tool, and right now they're "grasping at straws."
WH claims 'inflation tamed,' per DoorDash stats. Company says that's not in its report.
It comes the same week we learned the WH would likely not release key economic reports for October.

there's an entire joke online about how everyone thinks their culture specifically does this (that and "we really value big gatherings and food")
Wait, are people really upset that Mamdani spoke about his “aunt,” and it was actually his father’s cousin and not his father’s sibling?

Because that is an extremely normal thing a lot of cultures do. Including a lot of large Jewish families!
In a bit of a tense moment, one of the La Mega co-hosts presses Mamdani on why he "lied" about his "aunt" having been scared to ride the subway after 9/11 while wearing a hijab.

Mamdani says it was "not a lie" because he refers to his father's cousin as his "aunt."
