So much about politics can be summed up by the answers to two questions:

Who is allowed to be a bully?

And who is allowed to defend themselves?

John Doar is right there in all the histories of the Civil Rights Movement, but not with much about him personally. One main purpose of Lost Cause-type narratives is to erase such figures, so it's particularly fitting to change that in the face of Trump's anti-CRT=>anti-woke revisionist history push
I’d never heard of John Doar before. If you haven’t either, give him a google. People like this, all the allies through history, give the lie to “but those were different times”. There have always been people raised in privilege who still knew right from wrong and took on the status quo.
Well, after eight years of research, writing and revision, I just sent the full manuscript for THE DIVISION: JOHN DOAR, THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT, AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT to my publisher.

This is happening, people. Whether you want it or not.

abolish ice. theres no middle road on this and democrats will have to be held to it.
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

There’s a line about driving I subscribe to: people who drive slower than you are annoying, and people who drive faster are aholes. It’s the same with criticizing Democrats. Too much or too little (a subjective, complicated thing!) and the people around you are just WRONG. I’m as guilty as anyone.

I wrote about the ways propaganda takes root, how attacks against trans people in the US and UK reflect different mythologies of protection, and why combating disinformation at the local level might be a more effective way to dismantle these frameworks than abstract online arguments with strangers.

I took several years off social media and I’m still adjusting to the effect of the war and genocide in Gaza on the discourse on here. People I used to agree with on just about everything will randomly post something wildly antisemitic or cruelly indifferent to Palestinians. It just sucks.

Bigger picture, Trump is part of a political lineage, from the founders to Calhoun to Pat Buchanan, devoted to rich white male minority rule. Inherently authoritarian and prone to fascism + political violence – esp when most threatened/ least bipartisan (Civil War, civil rights movement, now)
My view is that the fascism thing was absolutely a long-term development, starting in '64 at the latest, but that Trump was a catalyst who accelerated the process by at least a decade

So, true enough that he's an aberration, true enough that he wasn't any kind of inevitable. But...
