The gov shouldn’t be able to access our thoughts at scale. Full stop.

But could “chatbot privilege” shield tech cos from accountability by keeping *their* speech private too?

This argument assumes chatbot convos are a social good we want to protect. Are they??

a fun thing to consider is that China, and probably Russia, almost certainly have the ability to post from the president's Truth Social account. they just know that they only get to use that *once*.
I think the White House is probably absolutely riddled with spies and listening devices and also they're getting exactly as much actionable intelligence as you'd get from browsing Truth Social.

An ad showing that Reagan opposed tariffs surely is not a national emergency. (It may be a personal one)

People see Ds as ineffective because they accept limits on their power (eg Biden with student loans). They see Trump as effective because he ignores those limits.

But if “effective” leaders are those that ignore limits on their power, then we are in a *bad* place.

Update: TikTok sent us a comment saying our story “deliberately distorts and sensationalizes how we respond to legal requests.”

They again did not answer our Qs about whether they’re sharing data with ICE, or why it is no longer their policy to tell you before they give the government your data.
New from me: TikTok ignored repeated questions about whether and how they share data with ICE. Also, earlier this year, they quietly updated their policies about what happens when law enforcement asks for your data. 1/

TikTok Won’t Say If It’s Giving ICE Your Data
Changes to TikTok's policies make it easier for the company to share users’ personal information with governments. TikTok did not respond to questions about the changes.
