It's conference day! 📝

I'm excited to attend my first in-person editing conference, put on by @edsguild.bsky.social, and I brought my husband along. If you see us there, say hi!

Yesterday we worked our way to Seattle and got to see a bit of town before it got dark.

Context: I'm getting ready for a concert and listening to podcasts.

The latest Perpetual Chess episode just popped up talking about Daniel Naroditsky and uh ... that's not a great topic to bring up while I'm **trying to put on eye makeup.**

RIP Danya

Eucontamination Ch. 2

(because this is apparently what I'm doing this weekend 😄)

"Disgust is not so much about inherent qualities of an object, person, or group but about the concern they create around contamination. Nothing is *inherently* disgusting."
Eucontamination Ch. 1

Very smart. Many words. Much dense. overheated-brain.gif

[Inserts "I'm joking" disclaimer before @billieiswriting.bsky.social throws me out for immediately complaining about her book. I will write some about the actual chapter.]
Eucontamination Intro

"Our liminal position left us in a near-permanent tension between us and them...
What we found most impactful in this space of being the other was our friendships and not our arguments...
This all began to make more sense once we started exploring the psychology of disgust..."

Apparently Bookshop thought this combo was so powerful they had to send it in two different boxes. 😂

Now that it's all here I don't know where to start, and my TBR pile is doomed (in a good way). 💜

My 8yo was messing around after school and made this heart, then decided it looks like it should go with a story. Now he's coming up with the story and planning designs for other beaded illustrations to turn the library time-filler into a multimedia event.

It's the first day of school, so I'm back in my favorite spot at the library. 😊📚

“As we walk through life, we weren't meant to do it alone.”
--> “We weren't meant to walk through life alone.”

While the first is technically correct, the second is clearer and less wordy, which are both goals copyediting addresses.

Well, I just realized that one of my invoice templates has had my first and last names in different font sizes for, let's see, almost two years now? Yeah ... even proofreaders need proofreaders. 😅

Today is my lovely friend Janine's birthday.

A concussion in January has forced her to resign from working as a therapist.

To keep her house, she wants to rent out a room or two and needs help furnishing them. We would be so grateful for even a few small purchases from her list: tiny.cc/bsai001

Is it the end of April already? What a year.

We've been busy with birthdays and chess tournaments and school recently, but my editing work is still plugging along.

And I have been enjoying the sunshine after a cold winter. 🌞

I snatched a used copy of The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store from a donation pile the other day (our library already has a copy).

I don't usually choose historical fiction, but I read half the book the next day. So that's what I'm #CurrentlyReading.

There's working on books, and then there's reading books for work.

The book I'm proofreading is on my home computer, so today I spent my afternoon reading the end of The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction.

Elementary school chess club is great.

You may overhear seven-year-olds try to make small talk by saying things like, "Do you like queen sacrifices?" 😂

I just realized my first full-book proofread was due three years ago yesterday.

I'm grateful for the managing editor who gave me a chance (I still get to do regular work for her!) and all the other MEs and authors who have trusted me with their books. 💕

A proper (portable) workstation.

It's not as nice as my big monitors at home, but I figure if I'm going to work from the library all day, I'll appreciate that I brought my second screen.

I mean, literally, the answer to this is "I am federally prohibited from telling you anything about my students without a subpoena or judicial warrant; if you have a subpoena or judicial warrant, please submit it to [Legal Officer/Office] to ensure it is in compliance with all relevant federal laws"
If you have students who are trans no you don’t. If you have students of color who may be affected by ICE no you don’t. If anyone asks you gender or racial the makeup of your class you don’t have to tell them.

Protect your class and protect your students by not complying in advance. They trust you.
1. Breaking News: Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting trans youth and teachers in schools who teach for them.

It goes after "social transition" and threatens arrests.

I will go through line by line, as I have the last 3 nights.

I still have a single license for Word, so this isn't an issue for me at the moment, but for anyone who does have a Microsoft subscription you'll want to be aware of this. ⬇️
Microsoft is going to price gouge you by adding their genAI to your subscription without your consent, and they are not transparent about how to avoid this bullshit.

Here's how to change your subscription back to "Classic" for a lower charge without Copilot: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffi...

One month after I copyedited this manuscript—one week after completing the edit review with the author—I got an email from his sons that Bill had passed away.

I fully believe that part of our job is to keep believing in each other. It is silly and small and yet fascism relies on hate and distrust. Idk. I have kids. I have to not destroy us as a family.
