Probably too early to sing its praises, but where HotD seemed like a very much reduced GoT series in terms of involved parties and pace (in GoT everything happened all the time, where in HotD you needed whole time skips), but KotSR seems so far a very nice insular story.

I think, the core driver for these "people" is this:
1) he got what he wanted from the opportunities that he had
2) his greed/lust grew
3) though extremely privileged it's not satiated fast enough, so the world has to be more accommodating
Just the mentality of very capable parasite.
