Dude Johto is good because it’s NONLINEAR: at one (1) point you can haul ass to a place that has one (1) thing you can do, that you NEED to do, and also you WILL be FORCED back here after you take the other way (has surf) so the only reason to do it before then is for the heck of it. SO OPEN!!1!

Like, I can kinda see why they backtracked for V, since going from a boy to being a father is The Narrative, but there really isn’t much gendering stuff for the hero in VI - XI so it’s strange it hasn’t come back
Speaking of gender options, I hope Dragon Quest XII goes back to letting you pick an appearance for the hero like in III and IV
