Still irreverent and still irrelevant. Author of MennoNightcaps: Cocktails inspired by that odd ethno religious group you keep mistaking for the Amish, Quakers and Mormons. Mennonites, cocktails, and everything in between.

In the Mennonite tradition (verenicke, not pierogi), you do the Rays first and then the Yankees
There are two ways to get your pierogi at Veselka

Makes sense. No one wants to think their ancestry has people (or even just one) who'd bicker over buttons and bicycles
I do not claim to be indigenous, but any way I can find out more about her, her family, her culture. And bring her firmly into the otherwise very detailed family genealogy and history. ...

A very Mennonite habit... but when I suggest we maybe been Mennonite, I got a weird amount of pushback...

None of those books have cocktail recipes. Just sayin.
Hello Mennonites, Mennonite writers, and fellow travelers: I wrote an appreciation all about Mennonite books for the lovely @49thshelf.bsky.social. Read on!

I always thought it was because the roads followed the river but I like this better.
Yup. What people don't truly appreciate is this area was settled by Mennonites who had little desire to interact with the outside world. I think the streets reflect that.

Ashamed at how long it took me to find "martyr" in today's NYT Spelling Bee.

It was a very different sort of film: Robin Hood argues with the rich about economic justice instead of using violence to steal from them; his followers sing hymns in between arguments; and they keep schisming into merry sub-bands
In another life we got Robin Hood: Mennonites

A Mennonite gal who was Swiss
Was known far and wide to French kiss
But what was far worse
And made people curse
Was cheating at games like Dutch Blitz

"Mennonite-coded." I'm thinking the family was singing 606 (118/20) as they walked.
A Mennonite-coded family just walked past and made ugly faces at the car.

Just occurred to me that taking down interprovincial trade barriers could have implications for Mennonite farmers sausage #AffairOfTheSausages

We actually get pissed off a lot. We're just usually a lot more passive aggressive about it.

I will never stop trying to make the Day of the Sausages a thing.

Right. May 2-4 weekend has no place on the list.

I checked my liquor cabinet. I'll be fine without bourbon.
If I must, I will subsist on a diet of ginger ale and maple syrup.

Is it just me or did the 500th Anniversary of Anabaptism fly a little under the radar this year?

Important PSA for Mennonites out skating. These stories from our past still have relevance today.
A couple of years ago the students @conradgrebel.bsky.social had an outdoor skating rink. Despite their studies of Mennonite history and Dirk Willems, they remained blissfully unaware that a local bylaw officer who had chased them to confirm they had a permit, had fallen through the ice.

Tbh, the cocktails I have been using to commemorate #Anabaptism500 haven't been all that nuanced. #Mennonite

If you're too lazy for a cocktail, you can always just have whiskey on the Blaurocks.
Other options:
Make a cocktail from @drunkenmenno.bsky.social's book
Start a schism over something dumb, like what color your car's bumper is
Help a neighbor rebuild their house
Sing in 4-part harmony
It's Anabaptism's 500th birthday. Celebrate by baking a pie and finding a new country that won't conscript you into the military.
