Interesting article about digital public policy and open data in local government practice
Lack of speed-limit data from Dublin City Council is hampering a “lifesaving” technology in cars. The council is now over 18 months late in meeting a legal deadline to publish a digital map of speed limits on city streets.

A must read. The most shocking for me is: 1) AI companies pay 'campus ambassadors' to undermine campus teaching itself. 2) students are encouraged to upload lectures to train AI. On the latter I might have to ban recordings allowed for access students.
I've said it before, but the first school that promotes itself as "AI-free" is going to corner the market on folks committed to learning. (gift link)

Irish fathers discover their kids??? No. It’s only 10 years since the State started to support new dads to take time off to care for their babies (now 11 weeks paid leave in baby’s first two years).

I’ve some words here on what’s and who is behind our improving division of work & care.

We welcome the Tánaiste’s reassurance that new laws will not make cycling without a helmet a crime.

While using helmets is important for cyclists, this law would have criminalised cyclists rather than users of high speed motorised bikes, scramblers and scooters, and dangerous drivers.

Where we're going we don't need cycle paths... and, sure, what do you want street lights for? Get some lights on your bike....

Bicycles do not require numberplates in Switzerland, even most e-bikes and cargo e-bikes don't

However, if your e-bike can go faster than 25km/h it is classed the same as a moped and must have a license plate...

...which is exactly the same as the law here in Ireland, only here it is not enforced.
What madness is being published in the Irish Times here? Zurich doesn't have plates for bikes (and Paris innovated licence plates first...) @cianginty.bsky.social

Should we try this? Would it be enforced?

In France's Lot-et-Garonne area, drivers using a mobile phone while driving will face an immediate six-month licence suspension and a €135 fine, in addition to other penalties applied at the national level elsewhere. www.connexionfrance.com/practical/de...

No space for cycle paths in plan for street which is primary route in Dublin’s cycle network plan
A Dublin City Council presentation to local area councillors wrongly outlined that Golden Lane is a secondary route in the statutory-backed Greater Dublin Area Cycle Network when it is designated as a primary cycle route with the policy expectation that it would be upgraded to that level. In the GDA plan, Golden Lane (highlighted on the map in a yellow box below) is a Primary Orbital route -- the same status as routes such as the quays, Dame Street, and the North Circular Road.

The main issue here is that cyclist crossing a red light or not having lights on is a very visible violation of the law. As the report highlights, speeding violations and mobile phone use by drivers is largely invisible, but as prevalent. Still, this morning I also observed cars breaking red lights.

-- How does it make sense for teens who are already banned or over-16s who are using illegal devices to be stopped by Gardaí for not wearing helmets or high-vis? Comment & Analysis: A Government plan to add a legal requirement for scooter users to wear high-vis and helmets when most problematic e-scooter use is already banned, but just not enforced, worrying shows that the Government is edging further away from evidence-based road safety and further towards Kafkaesque methods.

The decade at @ucddublin.bsky.social & @ucdspswsj.bsky.social is full. Thanks to all the wonderful colleagues I had the honor to work with and the students I taught and also learned from. Hard to believe how fast the time went & that live now longer in Dublin than in any other city in my life.

At least the motion is withdrawn for now. I still do not understand which green councillors on the committee voted for it. @donnacooney1.bsky.social & Ray Cunningham ? It seems also @greenpartyie.bsky.social lacks sufficient understanding of history & anti-semitic ideology.
Really concerning motion on the table at the Dublin City Council for the Monday sitting. Open anti-semitism is ripe within SF, PBP and wonder who else is supporting it. Dishonouring a former Israeli president, who has nothing to do with the current Israeli government, is just plain anti-semitism.
