In today's newsletter I talked about Bishop Budde, mercy, and kindness. It's stuff that even an atheist like me understands and appreciates. And stuff that totally exposes the MAGA shitheels for what they are. www.cupofcoffeenews.com/cup-of-coffe...
This, of course, led to Trump and all of the usual surrogates freaking the hell out, rebuking and insulting Budde, and demanding apologies. They reacted that way because the absolute worst thing someone can do is to remind MAGA CHUDs that they are callous and hateful. Not that a Bishop merely echoing the actual teaching of Jesus in which these people claim to believe is such an accusation. But the CHUDs know exactly what they're doing and when they get called out on it they're reminded of just how shitty they are as human beings, thus the reaction. To her credit, Bishop Budde refused Trump's and his toadies' demands that she apologize, saying, "I don't feel there's a need to apologize for a request for mercy." As I mentioned in a recent newsletter, though I'm not a religious person at all, I did manage, via various means, to get a fairly decent informal religious education. Through that informal religious education I came to appreciate certain aspects and teachings of Christianity and Judaism, which are the two religions to which I was most exposed. Those things did not, ultimately, lead me to anything anyone would call faith, but they have helped me to understand what people get from their own faith and they have helped me understand that one need not subscribe to any religion in order to identify the moral and ethical lessons that religions, when they are at their best, endeavor to teach and promote. With respect to the Bishop Budde story, I'm reminded of someone else who viewed religion in much the way I do. That person would be Kurt Vonnegut, who described himself as "an atheist who nonetheless worshipped Jesus Christ" or words to that effect. I'm too lazy to look for the exact words but I know he used the word "worship."That was tongue-in-cheek, of course, as Vonnegut made it clear in numerous writings that he did not actually worship Him, but he was a big fan of those parts of the Gospels which today's modern brand of right wing Christian nationalists find abhorrent. Vonnegut: “Some of you may know that I am neither Christian nor Jewish nor Buddhist, nor a conventionally religious person of any sort. I am a humanist, which means, in part, that I have tried to behave decently without any expectation of rewards or punishments after I’m dead . . . But I myself have written, ‘If it weren’t for the message of mercy and pity in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, I wouldn’t want to be a human being. I would just as soon be a rattlesnake’.” That's the stuff, man. I don't care what you believe or don't believe, but if you don't have mercy and compassion for the frightened, the weak, the needy, and the oppressed, to hell with you. And if you do believe, well, I suppose that's to Hell with you in a literal and/or spiritual sense. And if none of that tracks for you, there's another Vonnegut quote that gets you most of the way there: "Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies: 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'” It's not a high bar, being kind. Even if so few of us seem able to clear it these days.

Routine childhood vaccination rates have been declining precipitously in recent years.

The MMR vaccine is one of the most important. Today 14 states have an MMR vaccination rate for kindergartners of less than 90%. In 2019, just 3 did.

I know this isn’t the intention but I think of this in connection to the work of Centers for Teaching and Learning. We are sometimes criticized for reaching the same people repeatedly instead of those who resist, ignore, or don’t have time for us. It is with the willing that our influence grows.
