❗NEW PAPER ❗
Moms exposed to family ACEs (maltreatment, household dysfunction) as children are more likely to have children w/ACEs & have worse mental health. Are the trends similar w/dads? And does the intergenerational continuity of ACEs extend to community adversities (discrimination, violence)?1

1: Crowdsourcing #academia help.

TL;DR: we wrote a paper on reactions to the 2025 executive orders but it's gotten rejected several times and we're looking for an appropriate venue for it.

After a 7 month delay, I finally received the NIH/NIAAA notice of award for my K08! I’m most grateful to NIH staff for trying their hardest under these conditions.

Just in time to submit a new RPPR. 😅

I miss seeing these types of posts on my feed. Keep sharing good news, all! Congratulations, Dr Shick!
The best kind of news to wake up to! So grateful to learn that my Loan Repayment Program award has been renewed for a third year by NIDA. These types of programs are life-changing for early career folx, and have enabled me to pursue a career in research (even if it isn’t the most lucrative option).

One of my summer interns is interested in "radio pharmaceutical, researching radioactive drugs, and general drug development." Would someone close to this field be willing to chat with him about your educational and career trajectory? Please RT.

Feels rather pointless that I’m about to submit three papers on an NIH project that is 5+ months late on the NOA, effectively creating a 75% salary gap for most of this year. 😐 But, I made a commitment to the funders & participants, and I'm seeing this project through to completion.

Puerto Rican eateries are finally getting their due in the national food scene. If you asked Reinaldo Sánchez a decade ago where he’d be now, his answer was not co-owning ice cream shops with his longtime friend, Lorivie Alicea. (via @ctpublic.bsky.social)
Out-of-this-world, James Beard-nominated ice cream shop arrives in New Haven from San Juan
The co-owner of Vía Láctea explains what drew him to plant-based ice cream –– and Connecticut.

BREAKING: A federal judge reversed National Institutes of Health's terminations of hundreds of critical research grants that were canceled because of their alleged connection to disfavored topics, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and gender identity.

This is a major win for public health.

The plaintiffs did not accuse the NIH of racial discrimination, but Judge Young raised the issue. “I have never seen racial discrimination by the government like this,” in his 40 years on the bench he said, to which there was an audible gasp in the courtroom.

Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop!

Mobilized anti-Trump resistance is exceeding 2017 levels
"No Kings Day" protests turn out millions
Our unofficial estimate is that around 4 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.

Genetic material shed by tumors can be detected in the bloodstream three years before cancer diagnosis, according to a study led by investigators at Johns Hopkins University.

That study was made possible with federal funding. Now, many studies like this are canceled. hub.jhu.edu/2025/06/04/...
Cancers can be detected in bloodstream three years prior to diagnosis
Detection of cancer before a clinical diagnosis could give patients and caregivers more time for intervention and may lead to better outcomes because tumors are more likely to be curable
