Slashing funding for public health work that helps people experiencing addiction, homelessness and mental illness is shameless. At a time when overdose deaths have only recently begun to decline and the mental health crisis remains acute, dismantling this safety net will cost lives.

The Trump administration sent hundreds of letters Tuesday terminating federal grants supporting mental health and drug addiction services. The cuts could total as much as $2 billion.
