A good list and I'll admit I have failed hardcore at least two. Perhaps, in the future, my strengths will mitigate these failures.

That said, context is key if you don't care about failing colleagues you don't respect, then you're not a bad academic merely not in a good place for you.

I am not enjoying not watching the Blue Jays every day this spring.

Writing anything is difficult.

Watching and talking are easier than writing.

I missed the National Eye Institute from #ARVO2025.

It was weird - though understandable, given the current US governmental crackdown on research. THAT is much weirder.

I think of this ST:TNG scene in the gif when I read a sentence structured:

"X is an objective measure, psychophysics is a subjective measure."

where X = fMRI, EEG, ERG, MEG... and so on.

Journals have been so captured by metrics like impact factor and time-to-decision that they can't even conceive of the idea that scholars might choose a journal based on how good it is!
For example, do the editors and reviews provide good feedback, have good judgment, and do they have integrity?

Visual experience orthogonalizes visual cortical responses

Training in a visual task changes V1 tuning curves in odd ways. This effect is explained by a simple convex transformation. It orthogonalizes the population, making it easier to decode.
