Two very important graphs.
Net migration reached record levels in 2023 - and has since halved.
The vast majority of arrivals comprises students and workers.
Arrivals in small boats and asylum seekers - less than 5%.

I found this story incredibly heartening today. Wonderful use of AI, with humanity at the centre. 😊

Ukraine is a secondary topic for both Trump and Putin in Alaska. This is a mafia meeting arranged by war criminal Putin to restore Russia internationally & economically. Trump wants his "peace" glory and Putin used that to get this summit. But it's mainly about money for both of them, as always.

Authoritarians love "Gen AI" because it
- Sounds confident even when factually wrong
- Broadly conforms to & reproduces their biases, off the shelf
- Lets them create bespoke realities (text, audio, moving & still image) which agree w/ their biases
- Degrades trust in knowledge/evidence/expertise…

When I said 10 years ago that we didn’t need to fear intelligent AI nearly as much as we need to fear dumb AI used by people who think it’s smart, I was really hoping to be wrong but now none of us can retire because AI is bad at math
Trump’s new tariff math looks a lot like ChatGPT’s
ChatGPT may be the White House’s latest economic advisor.

I agree...it's a mistake to view this as an attack on science. It IS part of a dramatic expansion of an attack on knowledge, expertise, civic institutions, evidence-based reality, and democracy that has only just reached biomedical science (climate science and evolution had some early tastes).
Science benefits almost everyone. Nearly every aspect of modern life is premised off of knowledge gained from science.

Now think about the motives of a movement that considers science the enemy. Do you really think that science is their primary target?

I love this review of The AI Mirror in @physicsworld.bsky.social. The writer calls me out on the one area of positivity about AI (as a tool for science communication) that I would now happily retract.

Musk takes a break from posting fake news, fascist and racist memes, and slandering Ukraine with Kremlin talking points to again show that he’s a moral imbecile. A true renaissance man.
“You are a traitor.”

An absurd and insulting thing to say to anyone who posts what Senator Kelly did.

And even more insulting since he served as a U.S. Navy captain and a NASA astronaut.

Kelly was a combat pilot and flew 39 combat missions during Operation Desert Storm in the Gulf War.

So far, Trump’s art of the deal is to give Russia whatever it wants in advance while asking for nothing from Putin. At the same time, he has tried to extort Ukraine for mineral rights. Once again, he seems not to know or care who America’s allies and enemies are.

I couldn't agree more Stephen. Putin is absolutely loving this. How to legitimise dictators and organised crime. What on earth is happening?
Drudge Report dubs the Prez Comrade Trumpski.
MAGA, is that what you voted for? A coward bowing to Putin ?

I remember the Carter Vs Ford 'presidential race' of 1976. I was six years old. I actually thought the two candidates were racing cars across the USA and that the finish line was at the White House!
