The Capitulation Trade
The markets seem persuaded that we are past the peak of Trump tariff lunacy. But the path back down Mount Stupid will be long and bumpy, while some of the damage of these last weeks will be permanent

The best overview so far.
Hopes that Trump's tariff plan might end the uncertainty that has been hanging over the global economy since Inauguration Day are for the birds. His plan is so half-baked that no one knows whether the next move in tariffs is up or down. He has at a stroke destroyed the credibility of US policymaking
The End of the Economic World as We Knew It
Focusing on Trump's tariffs risks missing the bigger picture. The consequences of upending the global economic order on this scale will not be limited to trade

In yesterday’s Sunday Wrap I argue:
1- JD Vance’s speech in Munich on Friday marks a change in the world order at par with Putin’s speech there in 2007.
2- Markets have not yet grasped this a priced in the enormity of destruction now likely.

We know Jenrick is both a shameless opportunist and an overt racist/ethnonationalist.

But the test is now for Badenoch.

Ted Heath, to his great credit, immediately sacked Enoch Powell.

Does she have the same moral courage?

That’s so sad. First she leaves her village without an idiot and now ….
NEW: Former MP Andrea Jenkyns, who received a damehood in Boris Johnson's resignation honours, quits the Tory party for Reform, saying it was "not an easy decision" but "the truth is undeniable, the ship is sinking".

Your chance to be an early follower of a very wise European who will educate and update you for nothing (almost) every Sunday. Welcome Erik!
In today’s Sunday Wrap, I discuss the recent miserable European econ data and argue that we’ll get a moderate cyclical recovery next year.
I also explain why I’m moderately optimistic that EU - and Germany - will begin to reform in 2025.

New data on farms and inheritance tax: a third of farm estates over £1.5m aren’t farmers but wealthy people avoiding IHT by sinking money into farmland.

The Budget hits farmers too hard and tax avoiders too lightly. It needs to change.
