Exceptional piece about two movies you should see. Among other things, it helped me get ready for another tortuous season of baseball. (I wouldn’t have it any other way.)

Thanks, Pages, for correcting me to “Mike-en-scene,” that’s the exact wording I was going for

Over at @thebaffler.com, some thoughts on spiritual cinema, medieval mystics, Shaker chairs, dance music, and what it might mean for modern art to yearn for the divine. thebaffler.com/latest/wild-...
Wild Facts | Robert Rubsam
Spiritual cinema is fundamentally an aspiration: it must reach out toward something it cannot ultimately depict.

First Cow, Columbus (2017), A Hidden Life, The Irishman
Have asked this before and always like the responses. What are your biggest “I saw that in the first run cinema” flexes? Couple of mine:

Transformers: The Movie (1986)
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
Office Space (1999)

When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.

So. My partner suffered an accident that resulted in very significant injuries. While he is, thank christ, alright in the broadest sense, I am now an amateur RN/dog minder/kid chauffeur, so! I've restocked some prints to help keep us in pizza and pain meds.

Warm enough today to run outside instead of going to the gym, and I’m still not a great runner and likely never will be but I can go further and faster than I did when I started two years ago, and it was gratifying to run straight through the blocks that I used to need to walk when I first started

Personally I would just burn the building down
A smoke detector somewhere in my building has been chirping its low battery alert every minute on the minute for two straight days and honestly at this point I'd rather just be on fire.

It’s the Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia! That’s right the Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia!

When choosing movies inspired by THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy to cover for our series, we knew Disney's mega-budget adaptation of C.S. Lewis's iconic children's classic was essential.

Once again, the tech bros demonstrate they don’t understand what they read at all. Mentats are humanity’s solution to the destruction of all computers in the Butlerian Jihad, because it’s been decreed that “you shall not make machines in the likeness of a human mind”
I'm tryna figure out who they are, and privacy policy often tells you.

Privacy policy lists Mentat Forge as their actual biz name.

Visiting MF website, it's AI bs, so I click "View capabilities", and the link is a broken # anchor.
