For folks who don’t know, ethnic studies programs like African American/Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies and the like come directly from civil right era campus activism. Attempts to disempower such programs should be framed as attacks on civil rights same as much else rn.

This! I'm tired of Academia's elitism, overseeing that the real hit is coming from below with the layoffs and cuts at the state-regional level. The Ivys will comply and survive. However, the public infrastructure that serves working-class and first-generation students will be completely destroyed.
Harvard alum here to say that what happens to Univ of Maine and other public universities like it is way more important than anything financial that is happening to Columbia right now because Columbia can withstand the financial storm. and our public unis serve people Columbia wouldn’t sniff at.

Just for once, just for once in my life, I would like to see a panel or symposium or essay cluster on "the future of the university" (or its infinite variations) feature mostly scholars who have done a lot of teaching and admin and advising, and who have done it at schools that aren't super rich.

Sunday feels like an emotional boomerang. Cleaning, cooking, doing laundry, and taking breaks to cry. Some tears are from sadness and anger, but most of them are from being moved and touched by the thousands of people around my state, the country, and the globe ready to fight back.
