Hi, new and old followers! 👋

I'm Dominic and I mainly work on gender linguistics, the relations of form (e.g. prominence, duration) and meaning, and sometimes on sound symbolism.

My linguistics-related posts are usually in English, anything related specifically to Germany in German.
There should be another post after the post starting with "In sum this paper..." - at least I hope there is, and that one contains said link :)

It feels like the very early days of GPT, doesn't it? at least regarding the references, I think
January 9, 2026 at 7:17 AM
it does, that's why I linked Mark Dingemanse's post on its fake references :D

I mean, the author might be on to something. Just realized that the letter <G> is shaped a bit like the dumpster I'll throw this Garbage paper into.

and regarding references
bsky.app/profile/ding...
This paper is batshit insane. It also (of course) has A TON of bullshit references that do not exist. Hey @springernature.com retract this AI slop and fire the editor that let it pass. There is evidently no review or quality assurance process in place at this journal.
January 8, 2026 at 11:46 AM
I'll check with my co-authors regarding the paper we submitted to this @nature.com @springernature.com journal a few weeks ago. At the moment, retracting it seems like a plausible option.
Hey, did you know that Greek lost the phoneme /h/ because of secularism? You see, /h/ intrinsically symbolises the Creator. And hydrogen.

This journal is published by @springernature.com , and is hosted by @nature.com. How did this incoherent nonsense make it into print?
January 8, 2026 at 11:33 AM
In sum this paper doesn't do what it promises to do in the abstract and along the way; it mainly brings forward extremely awkward ideas about language, many of which the author did not even try offer references for. Whoever reviewed this should be stripped of all their academic titles. #linguistics

"whereas real words are used denotatively (and therefore have only one meaning), fake words are used connotatively (and therefore have multiple meanings/concepts, etc.) - I have extremely bad news for the author.

January 7, 2026 at 12:47 PM

Because international media largely seems to struggle to choose the correct wording to describe what’s happening: the US, under the self describes „peace president“, attacked another country and kidnapped its president. That is factual, no matter how bad or illegitimate Maduro‘s rule is (very bad).
