it’s insane that rightwingers have created a social and legal ecosystem where if any murder becomes a political issue, the right will ensure they get off free and then immediately pipeline them to the upper echelons of their society, rewarding them as the pawns they are

BREAKING: President Trump just signed into law the Laken Riley Act, which will require immigrants to be detained with no due process based on an accusation of a non-violent crime.

This is a dangerous bill that violates our Constitutional rights.

I’ve spent about 2-3 hours each day on calls or chats with my US gov friends. Here’s an anonymized recap of what’s going on.

First, I am so very sorry that they are living our last year at Twitter. I never wanted to think about that time again, and I hope my advice is helpful. 1/

If I had to guess, they'll pause all discretionary low-income & grant programs (but probably won't touch most of the mandatory ones).

I'd guess this probably illegally pauses:
-WIC (nutrition for pregnant moms and newborns)
-Section 8 housing
-LIHEAP (helps poor households heat homes in the winter)
NEW — OMB temporarily pauses all agency grants and loans programs.

Per copy of memo: "The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve."

Clearly can't under existing doctrine, which is why @bbkogan.bsky.social says the order is "illegal and massive"

tl;dr recent disasters are urban fires often spread through wind

"No longer is it a matter of preventing wildfires but instead preventing points of ignition [...] by employing “home-hardening” strategies — proper landscaping, fire-resistant siding — and [...] efforts such as brush clearing."
Some of my LA friends have told me that the problem is climate change, and it is. It’s January for fucks sake. But that doesn’t mean we have to solve climate change to better control fire. If we wait for that, cities will keep burning. There are ways to mitigate risk. www.latimes.com/california/s...

The reason I'm not leaving Meta platforms is they were already doing this. They've simply stopped pretending they care about protecting marginalized people, while leaving the boilerplate about disallowing dehumanization so they can keep banning the "men are trash" crowd. Nothing actually changed.
