“So.” “So.” “We’re really doing this?” “We’re, yes, it sounds like—that is, if you’re still—” “I’m in, man. Told you, I’m on board. Really.” “Then yes, we are. Doing this. Really.” “All right, so?” “So… what?” “You gonna ask?” “Am I—what?” “Ask. C’mon, I can’t exactly say yes if you don’t ask.” “But I—well, I sort of already have, haven’t I?” “Oh, the fuck you have. This? This doesn’t count, mate. Ask me for real.” “What, you mean—like, like something planned?” “No, Jesus, I just mean, like, the actual fucking question, clear and simple. Humor me.” Stede rolls his eyes before fixing him with an exasperated look. It’s a little fond, Ed thinks. Pretty certain. “Edward.” Stede takes a deep breath, tipping his head in concession. “Will you marry me?” Ed takes his own big, deep breath, then sighs it out. Tilts his head like he’s thinking about it, just to be a brat. Cracks a tiny smile. He picks up the fancy fountain pen laid neatly beside the document on the desk, signs his name right there at the bottom, and drops the writing utensil like it’s a microphone. Gives a single, decisive nod. “Sure will.” Stede breathes into a relieved smile as Ed pushes the document across the desk towards him. He extends his hand without a word, and Ed grasps it firmly, stomach lurching, head spinning, tingles rushing up his arm. Stede suddenly looks down at the contract mid-handshake, pausing and tilting his head to squint at Ed’s signature. “And—sorry, what was your last name again?” ***
