In its ongoing war against higher ed—and law firms—the battles MAGA has won are those where the other side surrendered in advance. (The Columbia/UT Austin/Paul Weiss "strategy," vs the Harvard/UCLA/Perkins Coie/etc strategy.)

Resistance is not just braver but also smarter and more effective.
This is a genuinely huge, sweeping victory today for the University of California—or rather, for us, its faculty, acting through our faculty associations, while the UC itself maintained a strict policy of deer-in-headlights silence.

The Trump admin has given up its appeal of a powerful injunction:

One thing that sticks out in this dreadful story is that the metric admins use to judge "success" is tenure line employment of program grads, but CMU's own English Dept. appears to be at least 60% non-tenure line faculty (teaching professors, adjuncts, "special faculty"). Crisis of reproduction.
Computational Cultural Studies replaces Literature and Cultural Studies sounds like a David Lodge novel without the humor.
This is bleak as hell. Who cares about literature when you’ve got computers?

Way to go Carnegie Mellon. Our tech oligarchs will not reward your loyalty

My brain is mush. I need to secure permissions for two famous C19 paintings to appear in my book. My recollection is there’s a database (or two, or…?) where you can get images of many C19 paintings for free or a small fee. Any tips? With thx from a person who deals mostly in words.

The situation in MN remains horrific. In-depth reporting here reveals a pattern of ICE detaining people who are here legally, ignoring court orders, shipping them out of state, refusing them counsel, and even deporting them. Make sure your Senators know the horrors more ICE funding will perpetuate.

“The federal agents sent to Minnesota wear body armor & masks, & bear long guns & sidearms. But their skittishness and brutality are qualities associated with fear, not resolve. It takes far more courage to stare down the barrel of a gun while you’re armed with only a whistle and a phone.”

The train filled immediately. Even 20 stops away from our destination we reached capacity.

People are cheering at every stop when they see people waiting to board because we are all starting to realize how big this is.
