Health insurance industry PR is working overtime right now diverting blame to physicians for claim denials and rising costs. I feel compelled to remind everybody that Optum (UHC) is the largest employer of physicians in the US. We have never had less power in healthcare than we do right now.

Filling out the form took me 6 minutes (it was 3 pages)

I put it in the "to fax" tray

So now we wait

14 minutes of my day for a single cheap med for a single patient

I have a lot of patients on a lot of meds

This is why physicians are pissed and why #PriorAuthorization is bullshit

When insulin was first patented in 1923, the discoverers declined to put their names on it as they felt that insulin belonged to the public.

101 years later, insulin is inaccessible to thousands of Americans because of price gouging by near-monopoly private insurance corporations and their PBMs.
BREAKING: CVS Health, UnitedHealth Group and Cigna are suing the Federal Trade Commission, claiming that the agency going after drug middlemen over high insulin prices is unconstitutional.

Medicine focuses a lot on the question “will this help my patient” but not on the question “when will it help my patient.” The latter becomes important as we age. We’ve developed a “time-to-benefit” tool on eprognosis.ucsf.edu to help answer this question. Here is a snapshot

So, patients are not receiving the equivalent of 200 mg of IV iron with transfusion. Not even close. Your recently transfused iron deficient patient likely still has a major iron deficit and will benefit with iron therapy. Do not be afraid to treat them!

If you’re a physician and you don’t have own occupation disability insurance (and not b/c you’re uninsurable) you gotta get yourself covered.

1 in 4 will sustain a disability during their working years.

Group coverage often sucks AND it doesn’t travel w/ you, even if it’s good.

This is important.
