On February 10, 1922, a Detroit Symphony Orchestra concert broadcast on WWJ, then known as 8MK, was the first symphony concert ever heard by radio.

Michigan's oldest radio station, WWJ was founded by the Scripps family and originally broadcasted from the second floor of the Detroit News building.

#tdih 1847, several 100 residents of Marshall, Mich., helped Adam & Sarah Crosswhite escape from being kidnapped. Went to Canada.

It was a victory that they survived, but a tragedy that white supremacist terrorism forced them to flee their home. See ⬇️+ lessons

We're sorry to hear of the passing of Detroit Tigers great Mickey Lolich, who participated in our 1968 Tigers exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum a few years ago and also added his handprints to the museum's Legends Plaza.

On January 30, 1933, "The Lone Ranger" made its debut on radio airwaves, broadcast from the WXYZ studios in the Macabees Building on Woodward Ave. Its popularity is reflected in this Lone Ranger-themed photographic studio, which was pictured at J. L. Hudson Co. in the 1930s.

On January 27, 1883, the first electric lights in Michigan were installed at Metcalf Brothers & Co. dry goods store in Detroit. In 1886, the store moved a block north along Woodward, between State & Grand River. It can be seen in "view on Woodward Ave." at the center L in this 1887 souvenir booklet.

Happy 189th birthday, Michigan! Known as the Great Lakes State, every location in Michigan is within 6 miles of a body of water & no more than 85 miles from one of the Great Lakes. In comparison to Detroit, Mi. is still a youngster β€”the city is set to mark its impressive 325th anniversary this July.
